Over the last week, my laptop (Compaq CQ62-251TX) which is 4 months old on the 12th of Jan, has started getting really sluggish again. If I start watching online videos (youtube, hulu, tvnz on demand etc..) the browser (I usually use Chrome but it does it in IE and Firefox too) starts to freeze, video stutters then the video stops moving, audio continues and the browser window goes grey, showing the program is un-responsive, then crashes. The computer is slow and near unusable for about 5 minutes after that, then it will work fine for a little whilte. Its done this once before, about 2 months ago. Ended with me making a complete disk backup and reinstalling factory OS. I've only installed about 10 programs (web browsers, photoshop, itunes, MS office, msn and skype), and the rest is just photos, videos and music. Surely this cant be normal for a 4 month old laptop? I've done complete virus scans and its not showing anything. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm going to reinstall the OS now, but what help can you give me so this doesnt happen again/or what could be causing this? Thanks GZ'ers.

Sam

Can you recreate the problem easily?

When I first read I immediately think It might be a flash problem. Can you check next time in the process manager, when the browser crashes its process might still be running. I have similar issues with Firefox sometimes when watching flash videos the flash plug-in will crash taking the browser with it.

Are you sure it's not overheating? Pretty much all our notebooks here use cooling pads, especially in the summer. Doesn't take much for a lappy to get warm in this weather.

Also, what video card are you using? Do you have the latest video drivers installed?

If you are running Windows 7 then you could restart it in memory test mode and let it run the tests?

Its using an:
"ATI Mobility Radeon HD 545v" with 512MB dedicated graphics memory.
4GB ram
Intel Core i3 @ 2.27ghz
With 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium

Ill try doing the memory test now.

And when it crashes, all the browsers tasks disappear from task manager.

And its not overheating. Its on my flat desk, in front of 2 fully opened windows, nice breeze coming through, and a decent sized fan (about 50cm across?) facing at me and my laptop.

[edit] just done memory test, and it passed with no errors
