Pretty much just what the subject says. Finally get a replacement for 12.04 which I have been running for ages. Roll on Mint 17 and the next Elementary.

Putting on Lubuntu 14.04 to replace xp this weekend. Just resizing partitions now..

Feeling a bit beta at the moment. Installer had the new borderless windows, but with some weird artefacts on them. Standard video driver sent my graphics card fan to max speed, Nvidia binary driver has fixed that. Some slight interface stickiness and crashes. I'm sure it will settle down. Loving the look of it really clean and modern.

I ran Ubuntu 14.04 from a USB key for a short time, just didn't like it though. Currently on an old laptop I run Vista and Elementary and Mint. The only reason I kept Vista was due to the fact that an old program worked and it won't work under 8.1 which is on my other machine. But have successfully installed it under Wine in Elementary, so now deciding whether to just make the laptop boot Elementary or Mint and lose Vista.

I suspect really well until you try to do anything useful. I've setup dual boot several times over the years and for me Windows in the best tool for the job. Mac would come before Ubuntu for me as a desktop OS. Of course my personal web servers and game servers I run are all ubuntu.

I've been running 14.04 on my home desktop since Apr 27 :)

The upgrade went very cleanly and painlessly.

I still get some Crash Reports, but not as many as with 12.04.

One thing that doesn't appear to be right (which was why I switched to 14.04) is MTP support.

Copying Music files to my S3 (Android 4.3) sometimes puts odd DOS-filename files on the phone's SD card... the only way to get rid of them seems to be formatting the card :(

MTP support in linux is flaky, it's a Microsoft protocol. Using it with my GS3 comes (in raring) and goes (saucy); when it works it crashes dolphin sometimes. A waste of time.

Far easier to use the AirDroid app, turns your phone into a server over the wireless. Worth it just to be able to send texts using a keyboard and your favourite editor.

Linux is NOT a desktop Operating system despite how many people try to claim it is. Linux should be a Server OS only where it does a reasonable job. In 15+ years of evaluating it, I've yet to find a single Linux Distribution that worked as well as even the worst MS Operating system.

I setup a few new servers with it on EFI boot. Seems fine except its missing a critical package for me: likewise open! Had to install from deb. Is this 1995?

What are your criteria for a desktop OS? The only things stopping me using it are that MS protocols I need to work with occasionally from home perform poorly under linux. RDP for example. We run an MS shop at work, so no chance of slipping linux in there on my desktop. Still have it as a VM for messing around with though. Email, web, some gaming, basic office compatibility, speed, updates, stability, all perform fine.

I don't believe we will ever see linux on the desktop though until a linux vendor can make big inroads with a hardware vendor or two and make a range of pre-installed hardware available widely. Very few people who buy a computer would even know that you can run an OS that is not pre-installed on it, let alone go out and download/install an alternate linux OS.

I was a strong advocate of Linux Desktop for a long time and also being heavily involved with ubuntu from the very earliest Alpha releases. However I now tend to agree with Networkn Linux is primarily a Server and Appliance OS it has completely missed the boat for the desktop.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I've been using AirDroid for a while, and I had exactly the same issues with it as I'm now having with MTP. Maybe its an Android 4.3 issue?

To reply I was waiting till I next fired up my Lubuntu 14.04 install, my main desktop is still on Saucy, but I happened to have the GS3 plugged in to charge, and noticed "SAMSUNG" appearing on a list of devices, clicked on it, and it worked, first time, every time, if a bit slow at times. Some update sorted it, I guess.

Sounds like a locale issue, the file names have characters from some windows code page and they're being interpreted as UTF-16. I presume you've tried putting the SD card in a reader then deleting them from a computer, and using a fully featured file app like FX?

Really? I can run Steam games, Windows games (through CrossOver), have Spotify, Skype, can open virtually any MSOffice document, switching audio (while continue to play), between speakers and headset is seamless, run Jitsi for encrypted voip calls, please tell me what I am missing?

just had occasion to find this out; needed to get photos off a Nokia Lumia. I'd struggled with 13.10 and gave up, and ended up installing Zune in XP, but still a lot of hoops to jump through, just to copy some photos. Zune is like iTunes, you can't just copy stuff, you have to set it up to sync to where you want the data.

I should have warmed up my old box with Lubuntu 14.04 on it. I plugged in the cable, and it worked first time, and could copy the photos using the file manager. Far easier that using Windows, weird.
