OH and also, I just pressed my iTunes icon, and it bounced a couple of times and highlighted the edges of the current window that I am in right now for a moment and unhighlights them... - still nothing.

OK I did the SMC - same issues. Everything works fine, except iTunes won't open, and I can't install anything else... no Netflix.  Is there an 'installer' program that can be malfunctioning and not allowing me to update correctly hence not allowing my iTunes to open - and also unable to install anything for that matter??

How is that done? Will I loose anything? I have backed up to an external hard drive the other day, since online it was telling me to wipe clean and start over. But I haven't done anything drastic since I can't tell if everything will work out... This laptop is only a few months old, and I don't get why this is happening... I don't want to do more damage, or loose anything....

I really appreciate your help, thank you.

Apple calls that a 'reinstall'. These are the instructions to get started:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718

Do you have any files on the machine you don't want to lose? Get those off the machine before you start.

Btw, did you try creating a new administrative user like someone suggested earlier? If that works you might not need much else.

CYaBro: What if you create another admin user account and log into that?
Does iTunes work then?

Try what CYaBro said first (if you haven't already) - create a new admin user account and see if applications work ok on that new account.
Otherwise a reinstall isn't too painful

I just made another admin user and it still doesn't work... It just bounces around a few times and NADA! I already backed up to an external hard drive... How do I know if EVERYTHING made it?? It took 23 hours, if that tells you anything. I don't have much of anything on my laptop; pictures, music... thats about it.

You could just get it fixed under warranty probably.. not normal sounding issues.. https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

Compare folder/file sizes (⌘+I or ⌘+G can't remember) of the important items

The idea is to do a reinstall anyway (not a reformat) so you shouldn't lose any data if you don't reformat the drive

I would give Apple a call. I've called plenty of times outside of the 90 day 'phone coverage' period (but while still covered under the standard Apple 1-year warranty) and as long as you are courteous and polite, I've found the Apple support team are more than happy to oblige. It's one of the best things I like about owning Apple products TBH.

I know they have diagnostic utilities that you can run that will allow them to see your screen and for them to guide you through various steps to fix your problem while on the phone, which might make it easier to diagnose and troubleshoot your issue quickly. Good luck.
