From what I understand, you can also do 'time machine' to a network drive as well.

Still, understand the meaning of Time Machine - Going back to a stage where things worked and thats important.

In Windows, if some update screws up my system, I can just go back in time by selecting the recent System Restore Point created and that resides in my local drive.

It would be nice to have the same with Time Machine

I agree, there are few differences between Windows System Restore and Time Machine

Time Machine != Windows System Restore

Time Machine is an automated computer backup.

Writing the backup to the same drive you're trying to backup, largely defeats the purpose of having a backup. It's like writing your pin on your eftpos card.

Time Machines wasn't born out of the need to fix things when something screwed your registry ;-)

Other than what's on the Apple website, I can't go into detail (developers are under NDA until public release), but i'll say it's a lot more integrated into the system, and a lot more fine grained than the overview above shows.

...you'd still need a clone backup tool though (wouldn't you ?)
- like CCC or SuperDuper - for exact/bootable replicas of the OS drive.

..forgive me if I don't have my facts straight but TM, while being very integrated and automatic will NOT be able to create a bootable 'image' of a previously-fine-but-now-'hosed' OS. Again, this is my understanding..maybe TimeMachine will be THAT good that cloning is no longer needed...

Nope, no cloning tool necessary. If your HD dies, or you want to restore to a good backup, just boot from the leopard install dvd. You get the option instead of installing a new system, to restore from a Time Machine backup.

My views were after watching the Guided Tour on the Apple Website which everyone sees it before having Leopard in their system. Things should be clear before we buy

Chaks, this is what the Windows Vista Full image backup does. Unfortunately this is only avalable in the Premium and Ultimate editions (dumb, I know).

Most consumers aren't interested in what api's developers can use to add some really cool, and quite sophisticated backup features to their apps ;-) ... there's a hint given in the Address Book example.

Hmmm...I know you can't break the NDA lduncan but does the below quote from some mac site hold true - that RI isn't a user feature? (don't answer if ya can't : )

"For resolution independence, Apple is only at stage two: Leopard includes the new API for developers to start using."

Actually, Apple introduced this API in Tiger, although they have made many, many fixes and improvements in Leopard that make it easier for developers to support RI.

One developer I've briefly discussed this with is actually quite frustrated that Apple dropped Resolution Independence as a user feature in Leopard. His small company put substantial man-hours (and thus money) into making their new app resolution independent, but since it's not a user feature, it was basically wasted effort that he could have put into other features for this software.

That said, Mr Schoenrank's description of Apple's pattern is correct, and not all planned features can be completed on schedule. This is probably why RI isn't enabled as a user feature in Leopard."

Also, will I be able to install iLife '06 apps onto Leopard from my Tiger disk? (...as a retail-bought copy of Leopard won't have iLife '08)
