joker97:

Because, Apple.

No. Because they are a hardware company, as SideFX said above. Its quite obvious really.

Geektastic:

Yet Apple do not charge a cent for OSX and only frustrate people already using it on their Macs elsewhere in all likelihood by taking this attitude.

It seems really odd that they are happy to allow Windows to run on their machines yet not so to do it the other way round. They go as far as to make Windows versions of iCloud, iTunes etc.

I see that they essentially want to ensure we only buy Apple hardware - something that I am usually happy to do. However (in my case) the Surface Pro 4 is a better machine for my mobile computing requirement than any Apple hardware currently available. It would be nice to simply be able to run OSX on it or Windows.

Hackintosh always seems to be slightly more complicated to execute than I am comfortable with! undecided

So, your happy with Apple making their OS free to you, as they are a hardware comopany, niow you want to avoid buying their hardware so you can use your free Mac OSX elsewhere. What your really saying is you want Apple to cease operating. As you wish to exit Apple business model (hardware) yet still use their FTA software.

Windiows, It isnt odd. Windows is software, Apples not interested in software, MS can have that business. Apple seem quite accomodating to allow Windows on a Mac. Keeps their customer with more options, doesnt affect Apple's business, and MS gets sales, its not odd at all.

My question is why would any sane individual want to use an Apple product?

Nothing wrong with the products

Integration is very good, excellent in fact

I use both. I've used Windows for years and years I like Windows. I've use MacOS at home since early 2014, its good too.

Indeed. You could easily ask the same question of Microsoft, or Google. In all three cases, as long as you drink the Koolaid to the very last drop, you end up with a near seamless experience. Personally, I don't like Koolaid, so I always end up with a mix that makes my life more difficult but I prefer that way because screw you, grand vision of world domination.

I've lived in a the Windows world for most of my life (and selling/building Microsoft solutions has paid for my house and car etc.) but have built a couple of Hackintosh PC's running OSX and didn't really liked the experience so went back to Windows. However I recently bought a MacBook Pro and I love it. I think OSX on Apple Hardware is a pretty excellent combo.

So you can run OSX on non-apple hardware but in my experience its very much a poor man's solution to the actual "Apple experience".

Good points. All of this stuff does all the same things, whether thats phones, tablets or PC's. And they really arent that much different at all. Windows vs OSX wise, things can be a bit different but doing the same things, or pretty darn similar. One task may be two clicks quicker on Apple, another 2 clicks quicker on Windows. Loyalty, blind or real, is a much larger factor. (in creating a huge divide between the two)

Geektastic: Why is there no Basecamp equivalent allowing me to run El Capitan on a Windows machine?

Apart from the Surface there isn't really such a thing as "a Windows machine". Microsoft is a software company that makes some hardware, Apple is a hardware company that builds software to run on it's hardware.

Just like Microsoft want you to buy and run a licensed version of their software, there is no advantage to Apple having you bootleg the OS and run it on any old bit of tin.

Years ago Apple did try licensing the classic OS to other manufacturers, that was soon kyboshed by Steve Jobs on his return.

That said, there was also the standalone Darwin that is the core of Apple's OS, that was open source for a while and ran on both PowerPC and Intel and was advantageous to Apple during the transition from PowerPC to Intel. But was curtailed when they got bored with the effort of maintenance.

Has some good guides of the kind of hardware to buy if you want to build a mac that works well.

Here's where I make tdgeek's eye twitch: whilst I still have no moral issue with watching US Netflix, because I'm paying Netflix and Netflix has paid the studio(s), I would not build a Hackintosh because I believe that would be taking legitimate money out of a developer's pocket.

LET THE BATTLE COMMENCE.

This is called the system management controller, and in effect is a glorified fan controller amongst other things.

Wow that's a reductionist view.  The SMC is so much more than a fan controller.

My question is why would any sane individual want to use an Apple product?

Because, at least until very recently, non-apple products had the design DNA of a black plastic box and ran the world's worst OS.....

I hate how marketing people try to misuse DNA as a design concept.

No one knows how DNA started. There is no evidence it was designed:)

Anyway.. to Windows/Mac...

Macintosh had the superior OS until the mid 90's.

Microsoft had DOS or Windows running on DOS - terrible.

Then, Microsoft created Windows NT.

At first, it was a server OS. But, in the early 2000's, it became their core OS.

I think Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7,8,10 have been overall technically superior to Mac OS since.
