I'm not a huge fan of Apple's built-in mail app. You could try Spark mail app as an alternative: https://sparkmailapp.com

They have apps for both MacOS and iOS.

It's quite similar to the old Sparrow mail app, which unfortunately was acquired by Google and discontinued.
