Benjip:

You might want to wait until Tuesday, as there's a very slim chance Apple will announce a new MacBook Air at WWDC.

This means either the one you're looking at now will become cheaper (on clearance), or you'll be able to get the new one at the same (or similar) price.

It's a slim chance but personally I would wait.

I'm interested in seeing if the rumour of a 15" model is true

That's an analogue VGA connector.  If the monitor has DVI or HDMI you'd be better to use one of those.  If it hasn't, may be easier to get a new monitor

That connection to the Mac is Thunderbolt 1. I believe that the new machines use an incompatible (without adapter) Thunderbolt 3, just to keep you on your toes. Apple loves adapters.

You could get one of these if you really want to use the existing monitor.

I also notice you're plugged in to an ethernet cable. You'll need to either get another adaptor for that, or alternatively use wifi.

thanks - I'll look into that.....

We bought the existing monitor in about 2007 with our old compaq desktop computer that stopped working about 2012 and we just kept the monitor as it still works ok

if the screen on a new MacBook has great picture / graphics then I may not need to bother with an external monitor, or I can just get a newer more compatible monitor... I have to confess I do like a bigger screen as my eye sight isn't what it used to be!

I unplugged the etnernet cable some time ago and no longer use it - I just use wifi / wireless

The present MacBook Air ONLY has:

Two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports with support for:

  • Charging
  • DisplayPort
  • Thunderbolt 3 (up to 40 Gbps)
  • Thunderbolt 3 digital video output

    • Native DisplayPort output over USB-C
    • VGA, HDMI, DVI and Thunderbolt 2 output supported using adapters (sold separately)
  • USB 4 (up to 40 Gbps)
  • USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbps)

So you can buy expansion hubs as previously mentioned. The ones from PBTech are expensive. Cheaper from amazon Australia.

As previously mentioned wait till the WWDC next week:

Tues 7 June 2022
5:00 am NZST

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

@OnceBitten – I didn't see if you had upgraded your drive to a SSD in your 2012 MBP? I also have a 2012 MBP, and a SSD has really given it a new lease of life. At least it might buy you some time to wait until a new MacBook is released.

Your gonna love it. They are great machines.

The M1's are fast and use surprisingly less memory that most people thing.

Yep that adapter from TB1 -> TB3 should be sufficient.

No - We've just decided to go the whole hog and upgrade completely

TBH I've not been using the MacBook much as it is so slow - I just tend to use the iPad, but would prefer to use the MacBook

I'll probably go to my local Apple store and check out the options... then check the prices of all the retailers on the next couple of weeks

I have been looking at iMacs too, because that will mean there's no need for a separate monitor, but having a MacBook / laptop is probably better as they are portable.....

FineWine:

Please max out the RAM to 16Gb. It is only another $350, but you will not regret the startup and operational speed difference.

There has already been a lot of wonderful suggestions and ideas for you so won't go into those, but I'd like to reiterate what @FineWine mentioned re maxing out the RAM.  Note that with these Apple Macbooks (and MBP for that matter) one can only have their RAM upgraded at purchase/order time - they are NOT upgradeable after the machine is built, so you only get that one chance to do it.  And with that you *may* not be able to get the device at retailers are they generally stock/carry standard build - still worty trying and checking but you my have to end up getting it from Apple directly for the model with upgraded RAM.

And yeah certainly the suggestion to hold off until the WWDC announcement next week - see what comes up and what is available, then you could decide on what to get, when etc, unless of course your current MBP is dead and you need a laptop now...

Just me 2cents worth of thoughts! :)

I wouldn't count on it. Apple is still selling the M1 model at the same $999 price point in the US, so I suspect that the local prices won't drop either (aside from maybe a tiny amount by some retailers).
