Old: Well it failed because they were worried about revenue due to hardware sales rather than licensing. They need to look at it differently. There will always people who will pay extra for the name but on the whole, what makes Apple "special", is the OS. Hardware is nothing.

I find it very unlikely that Apple will allow 3rd parties to manufacture hardware for their OSes. The big advantage Apple has it the quality that it maintains over its products because it controls all aspects of the operation. It would be very hard to ensure a smooth experience otherwise. See how Google is struggling with Android in terms of usability and consistency.

Magu: Their hardware has it's issues too as you are well aware, and ultimately the situation will resolve itself.

I don't believe there to be any way to continue long term for them without it.

I already know of plenty of IOS > Android converts, almost none the other way.

All interesting points

You will get Apple to Android converts as Android is new. Just as you did when the new power companies came out, everyone flocks to them. I feel Apple's business model is strong, and while they don't it seems need to offer a range of devices, and they are losing share to Android as obviously expected, they still make 2/3 of global smartphone profits.

Plenty of room to move if they wish to, strategy wise.

Android isn't that much newer, almost all of the people I know who migrated either did so because Android offers them greater flexibility (More technical people), or for the superior hardware. People like choice, and Apple doesn't offer people choice.

Its newer, much newer.  So technical people don't like iPhones, that is a fallacy. Android does offer greater flexibility, that is correct, as in customisation. Superior hardware, you are joking. Nothing inherently wrong with other phone hardware, but Apple provides a quality build.

Apple doesn't offer a choice of models, correct, or of a full price range, that is also correct.

Newer is a relative term, Android has been around long enough for people to decide if they like it. I don't agree with superior hardware, I think my Samsung Galaxy S is superior is every way to an iPhone (and has equal build quality) (though this isn't the place for that discussion). I didn't say all technical people don't like iPhones. Most Android devices don't have propriety connectors etc either.

What I am saying basically, is that Apple needs to defocus on keeping it's systems locked down and so tightly controlled, it didn't work for them last time and probably won't in the longer term this time either. I could be wrong, but I think once SJ passes on, their will be a strong push away from this.

Sure, we can agree to disagree, this isn't the right forum. But I wish anti-Apple users would stop saying its locked down, I do find that annoying. As for the future, Apple smartphones have or are being taken over by way of volume by Android as you would expect, depending on what you read. But they make 2/3 of global smartphone profits, so they have a successful business model. That in itself shows that what they do, works.

TDG: Yes and it did 20 years ago with the Apple 2E etc as well.

I am not really anti Apple as such, I recognize the place in the market they cater to, but also equally understand that won't ever meet my needs nor my preferences.

I am not sure how you can argue they aren't closed off however, everything about Apple is propriety.

It's not like the Apple business model is exactly a failure, why change it?

It was before, until Windows got bigger because anyone could install it on almost any hardware, that's why they need to change it. It works now because they got to market first with the idea.

I have been using Android for a while now. My next phone will be an Apple. Not that impressed with Android to be honest and I am interested to see just how good Apple is. I have never heard a negative review from someone who owns one.

Anyone can write apps for the Appstore. Anyone. It just needs to be written to their standards, meaning the criteria of layout, icon, blah blah. It's just quality control, pure and simple. You can I assume, make an Android app and get them up straight away, not so with Apple, but I do see that often an app gets to iOS first oddly enough. Not sure why.

The iphone and ipad have proprietary interfaces, yes, although its just a glorified USB connection. Maybe to control the cable quality, and/or sales revenue of accessories?  Yes, with Android using universal connections that is easier, for sure, and thats what worried me. But I do the same as you do on our devices. It's just a little different. I find it easy, as do you, but its different.

Oh and I'm not anti Android. far from it. I see the pros and cons of all devices, phones, tablets or whatever, thats what I do when I make a purchase.
