News are circulating that Steve Jobs has resigned as Apple CEO:

PRESS RELEASE: Letter from Steve Jobs

August 24, 2011-To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

read this and thought bs but looks like it is true. Be interesting to see how the great Apple fairs without him at the helm

Keep dreaming. Steve likely set a plan for the next 10 years for Tim Cook to follow.

Because Linux is less secure and reliable than Windows, right?

Classic, the thread has already de-generated into meaningless broad sweeping generalisations.

Ummm K... Sorry about that :s

The time will come when Android will dominate the high spec smartphones and Apple will need to rethink their strategy...

Though I was thinking that if they halved the price of the iPhone; the Appstore would surely make up for it.

If that does happen its got nothing to with Android being an "open system".  There is no such thing as an "open system" if that system is created and owned by a company.

Back on topic.

I feel there will be changes over time. Catering for more pricepoints, and making iOS more customisable, as that is a clear point of difference that the Android population enjoy. I hear the iPhone4 will have an 8Gb version as 3GS won't do iOS5, maybe this is a slow start to more price options being available.

The new CEO may try to push this forward, maybe.

I believe that Apples only chance for long term success is to stop being the only manufacturer to offer IOS and OSX. (The only significant point of difference really between Apple and others) Once SJ passes on, I believe hopefully unless he has it legally tied up, they may consider allowing other manufacturers to put IOS and OSX on their devices, if not, I forsee the same thing that happened before, Android will eventually swallow the entire market the way PC's did.

I don't like SJ, but I pity his condition, his type of cancer is particularly brutal.

They tried that once and found their legs being cut from under them with clones selling way cheaper than Apple versions. They soon killed it off..
