Chrisclarke: I went into Harvey Norman a few months ago (not long before they ipad mini was released) looking for an Mac mini. The sales guy looked bewildered and called his supervisor. He told me they hadn't been released yet but were by all accounts not very good. I asked if he meant the ipad mini, which it turns out he did. He said (with great authority) there was no such thing as an mac mini and that I was confused.
Two months later another guy in there hadn't hear of an airport extreme either... I just give them a wide berth now...

What? Aren't those people normally employed in one area, i.e. electronics or whiteware etc... it's not like they need to know everything in the shop, but if they are based solely in electronics they should know the products!

The unfortunate reality is that they often don't know, and won't admit they don't know... it's a shame.
Peppery: Doesn't surprise me. Everytime I've gone in there the store is usually empty and there's a couple of staff just chatting and not being helpful. In addition, it has taken me months to finally spend my $50 gift card at Yoobee - they don't stock Magsafe -> Magsafe 2 adapters, nor the Apple Earpods. Frustrating.
This is why I love Ubertec. Their staff are always helpful and not pushy so I'm happy shopping there. Another decent one is PBTech who actually had better pricing than Apple's education store. Although they did offer me a discounted Norton 360 for PC the other weekend when I bought a Mac Mini from them (they were closer & ubertec are closed sundays and I need gadgets now!), had to point out that it would be a silly buy.
