Pushy salespeople who think they know what's good for me and what I want better than I do piss me off to no end.  Yoobee lost a purchase from me this past weekend because of that kind of behavior.  The salesguy seemed to think that there was no way I knew why SSD was superior to a regular hard drive and what the difference was between RAM and storage, and proceeded to lecture me as to why my choice was inferior to the one he was recommending, even though I had told him quite clearly that I didn't need a sales pitch and knew what I wanted to buy. Once my polite brain cells had departed the building out of frustration I did point out that some of his definitions were incorrect, and that I had probably been opening up and playing with computers long before he started using a fork and knife (bad of me).  Such a huge contrast when I walked across the road to Noel Leeming, the guy just asked me "this is the one you want? you know it doesn't have an SSD drive or the latest Retina technology?" And I said "yes, this is definitely the one I want thanks". And that was it.

Too bad Ubertec is closed on Sundays, would have saved me some aggro.

What do you expect, Yoobee is full of fruit... ;)

I've had similar experiences, to be honest. They seem to assume that everyone who walks in their door has just been drawn in because OMG APPLE and has no idea what they're looking at.

Sales people don't come near me. I have a face that discourages interaction.

That's exactly the attitude.  Argh! LOL.  It's funny because the odds are that most people know more than they appear to know, so the salespeople in there end up looking like idiots.

gehenna, I need to borrow that face

Goosey, I think SSDs are great for the speed. My partner has the Macbook Pro with Retina and SSD and the speed is fantastic.  But for my purposes and current budget I'm more interested in a large hard drive.  While I know that it's a worthwhile tradeoff, and most people just store their larger files on another drive, I prefer to not carry an external drive around on a day to day basis.  I would rather have more RAM and a larger hard drive than a small faster hard drive, just my preference at the moment.

Fair call.. I mean unless you need to save the world... what do you need the speed for anyway !
My old macbook pro from 2007 still has quick access to the hard drive and is the same size as the most standard SSD.

I remember sitting off to the side when my wife was buying her MacBook Air a few years ago at YooBee. My wife is very clued up but even when the sales guy said "Apple Mac's don't get viruses" she was flabbergasted. Also when I yelled out "LIAR" he didn't know what to do or say :)

hmm...ya some sales people are very much like that.. love it when i have a salesperson talking to me trying to tell me about computers (i am a software developer and have been dabbling in the dark arts since the teens). its just humorous at times..

does get kinda annoying though, i usually have my headphones on while i am checking out the latest new piece of tech out there so they dont bother approaching me..

You can't even pay me to use a spinning hard drive these days.
Upgraded my old laptop from 4gb ram to 8gb. I didn't see much of a difference.
But upgrading it from a 5400 RPM hard drive to a Samsung 840 SSD made a massive difference. Boot up times, launching apps, everything is super fast.

Wish I could upgrade the screen but I have a Retina iPad for that :)
If Apple releases a Retina Macbook Air next year then they have my money.

And with ~500GB to ~1TB SSDs now, it's even harder to use the "But I need spaaace" excuse ;)

Yes but those big SSDs are beyond the OPs budget

Re the advice from retail sales people, don't be too surprised. Imagine what is like working in retail and the pay rates...

Definitely way outside my budget at the moment. BTW Do any Macbook Pros have SSDs that size? If they do, and I had the money, I would definitely buy one of them.

You can BTO a MacBook Pro with a 512 GB SSD for "just" an extra $1120.

or you can just buy a 512GB SSD for half that :P

Yes, I realise that for the purposes of the OP it was probably out of budget, but felt it relevant to the "Why not an SSD..." topic that brought up the idea of storage space & external drives ;)

Alternatively buy an SSD and get a caddy for a large spinning disk to replace your optical drive.

best of both worlds.

on a side note - caddy is $20 with free shipping on ebay, $80 on pbtech...
