Are these Apple protection plans which are available on sites like Amazon, E bay etc which are cheaper then the apple stores or any other apple authorized retailers trust worthy??? Do they really work???? because its comparatively cheaper... I am confused coz i wanna buy a plan soon...

For an AppleCare protection plan to work it needs to be bought and registered within the original 12 month warranty. Apple may ask for proof of purchase for the hardware and AppleCare plan.

What ever you do don't just buy the box and assume that you are automatically covered, you actually need to register the AppleCare and this requires an Apple ID or a call to Apple

Another useful tip, AppleCare has two numbers, theres an "Enrolment" number in the box and the box has a serial number, note both of these down in case you run into any problems during the extended warranty period.


As for OP, haven't bought one off Amazon so its probably a case of buyer beware. Good luck and hope it works out if you do go down that path.

If you iPhone/laptop loses a home button/screen dies in london while under applecare, you will more than likely be able to get a replacement by just walking into an apple store, 

Trying to claim they Apple UK should replace /repair it under the NZ CGA is not likely to get you very far...

Apple Care's international coverage only applies to Mac and not iPhone/iPad. Unless you are a frequent traveller with a Mac, what are the benefits of getting and Apple Care for an iPhone/iPad over the Consumer Guarantees Act in NZ? I have never bought extended warranties for this reason.

AppleCare also extends the 1 Year limited warranty to 3 years.

I think the gamble, and it is a gamble, is better not to get the protection plan. We have around 10 Mac's at work in varying ages new to 4 years old. None have ever had any problems. If I had upgraded to the 3 year plan I would have burned what about $3000-4000? That's enough for two new iMac's.

The protection plan paid off for my 2007 mac book pro.... About a month before the end of the apple care period the track pad and top case were replaced due to fault. This was in addition to a headphone jack fault that developed and was repaired within the first month of purchase. The retail repair costs were more than the apple care price BUT.... 'back in the day when I purchased from magnum mac, they gave me half price apple care).

THe other thing with applecare is that you can ring them up whenever and they will help you out with anything pretty much from install programs or just general questions about software etc.  

This might of been a one off but my mate had an old iMac that had applecare, two years after the applecare expired the screen went, he rung up applecare and they replaced it for free even thou it was out of warranty.  If he didn't have applecare i don't think they would of done that.  The imac was probably at least 5 years old.

In this particular scenario I would agree it's not worth it because you're already spreading the risk across a number of machines.

However for myself personally I have found it worthwhile. As someone with intermediate computer skills I appreciate the piece of mind of having access to help if something goes wrong, and not having to potentially fight for a resolution under the CGA in the case of a major hardware failure.

Having just bought a new Macbook Pro, I absolutely didn't hesitate to get the Apple Care warranty.  More than anything it's the peace of mind it gives, because getting Apple products repaired can be pretty expensive.  I bought my last Macbook in the US before I moved here. A few months before the Apple Care warranty expired the hard drive just up and died. At that time I didn't know the Apple Care coverage was international. I sheepishly walked into Ubertec and they fiddled a bit with it, asked me if I had Apple Care, and just like that, I had a working Macbook in a week with no money coming out of my pocket.  Since that experience I don't even think twice about it.  I also have a Thinkpad which I've had to get the motherboard replaced under warranty and I loved how smoothly that went.  So yes, for expensive gadgets, I always get the warranty.  I'm completely comfortable opening up a PC or PC laptop and fiddling with it but not so much macs, so I go with Apple Care.  I do keep http://www.ifixit.com/ bookmarked for those out of warranty Apple devices laying around :)

Long and short of it, I recommend the Apple Care warranty for sure.
