With iCloud photos (currently beta) I want to prepare to consolidate and upload our iPhoto library to my iCloud account.
Please can anyone suggest a way I can upload this large number of files?
I only have ADSL at home. The photos are stored on a laptop, I could take this somewhere with a good UFB connection for example. Once the big initial upload is done, the small incremental additions will be ok to do at home.
Any ideas?

Is VDSL not available to you at your home location?

I don't know about icloud but microsoft deliberately restrict the upload and download speed of their severs so you do not compromise other users.

I wanted to do the same for office 365 migrations but it was pointless.

Just use your DSL connection and turn your laptop on to upload when you are sleeping or at work, might take a few weeks.

Huh. Well last time I checked, several months ago, VDSL was not available. Now it is! Got the go ahead from the boss. Have ordered online and see if it's all go!

What's your attenuation? That'll give an idea off your speeds.

I can't wait for ufb to be available for that very reason ... Cloud storage!

iCloud should perhaps do something like what CrashPlan does and send out a hard drive the first time you upload a large bunch of photos on it, then you send it back for them to upload it to your account.

By my calculations, if you have a good ADSL2 connection AND DON'T USE YOUR PC FOR ANYTHING ELSE, you can upload 300MB per hour.
150GB will take about 500 hours to upload.

Are you a professional photographer? That's a lot of photos. I've photographed 120 odd weddings, the keepers (400 - 700 per wedding) in RAW plus albums and PSD files come to around 175GB all up for all my professional work over 7 years. Of course I delete the rubbish photos and duplicates in my professional work, I'd say I delete 3/4 of the personal photos I take too.

The delete key is fairly key for me, and can reduce data storage needs and bandwidth requirements for many.

How to upload - just chip away at it IMHO.

Go here and look for a local school connected to the N4L network: http://map.n4l.co.nz/ , edit the filter to only show connected schools, if they are connected they will have Fibre + unlimited data. [hint larger schools have faster connections]

Yes uploading has always been very frustrating, even small movies to YouTube.
Not a fotog, just an early adopter of digital camera with thousands and thousands of family photos and videos.

We had a play with iCloud photo library at the weekend in preparation for moving our iPhoto library to iCloud. We have 200/200 Snap UFB. It was still very slow. We uploaded around 1000 images via the web uploader. This took 14 hours.

To make things worse when we checked in the morning iCloud had doubled and sometimes even tripled some pics. On top of that only 650 images sync'd back down to iOS devices. The rest did not. Metadata was also very wrong. Photos taken in Scotland 2007 showed up as Auckland 2013.

Apple have a serious amount of work to do on this before launch in my opinion.

As an all Apple household I want this to be the seamless solution Apple has promised and just work but I'm looking at other options for photos now. I just wouldn't trust Apple with a lifetime of pics at the moment.

officially the limit is 10.8dB as tested with their analyser, but it really depends on luck of the draw.

They do quite often allow longer lines now it seems.
