Following a vote yesterday, the UK government will now be banning smoking in cars where children are travelling.

One wonders why they continue to allow it in homes where children live, following that logic.

I wonder if it will happen here.

Good idea, I think smoking shouldn't be allowed in public places, It disgusts me and gives me a itchy throat and makes me very flemmy.

This isnt a person grievance against it but there are many reasons it should not be allowed. For example the amount of rubbish they discard. Anyway, Sorry for those who smoke and are tidy about it and respect others.

+1 to the UK, they should do this planetwide. Smoking in a car (or any other enclosed space for that matter) with non-smokers is just irresponsible, not to mention rude.

Although I don't think it's technically illegal yet, it is already a no-no to smoke in the house or car (even when the kids are not in it). The Smokefree organisation plays TV adverts about it.

The adverts are played in New Zealand (and I think made here too). They've been on TV for a couple of years now on and off.

Because cars are smaller than homes:

* The secondary smoke is more concentrated in a car then in a house.
* Any children are much closer to the source of the smoke than in a house.

That means that the effect of the secondary smoke on children is much greater in a car than in a house.

In Germany:

Most smokers will not smoke in their car because the retail price of a "Nicht Raucher" car is up to $20,000 higher than that of a car that smells of smoke. When it comes to selling cars that they have used in the company, Daimler-Benz will spend thousands of dollars de-smoking a car's interior and still sell it for a few thousand dollars less than they list an identical non smoking car. NR is seen car ads along with ABS etc.

Most smokers will not smoke in their own homes. Renters are normally forbidden by their rental contracts and home owners do not want to depress the value of their houses. Minus twenty five C outside and folks will put their coats on and go out to the balcony to light up.

According to the TV advert, it's not just the secondary smoke, which is why you're not supposed to smoke even when the kids are not in the car (and even with the window open). Apparently many of the toxins in tobacco smoke get into the upholstery, etc. and then leak out slowly over time (and probably in certain weather conditions) continuing to poison the kids even days / weeks later.

Same goes for smoking in the house. The only "good" (relatively speaking) place to smoke is outside and well away from children and others.

Apparently the advertising promotion has ended for the moment (it was also run in 2006). It was being done by the Health Promotion Agency (which runs Smokefree among other things). You can still read about it and watch / listen to the radio and TV adverts on their website.

I would much rather see the banning of stupid parents.

We don't need laws to tell us we cant smoke with kids in our cars. Its common sense. Parents should write a test before having kids...
