Just wondering, was thinking of buying (or at any rate price comparing) one of these -

https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Barracuda-3-5-Inch-Internal-ST4000DM004/dp/B071WLPRHN/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1540857179&sr=8-4&keywords=4tb&dpID=513zQrsJZqL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

but when I tried to work out shipping to NZ it came up with one of those stupid  'we don't ship to your country' things. In that case, methinks, I'll see if I can still get one of these -

https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Barracuda-3-5-Inch-Internal-ST4000DM004/dp/B071WLPRHN/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1540857179&sr=8-4&keywords=4tb&dpID=513zQrsJZqL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

but when I try to check that out, yes I can get it sent to NZ, but the cheapest postage has gone from US14.02 the last time I ordered one (16th July, Deal of the Day) to US33.01 now.

So, any thoughts on why I can't get a HDD without a plastic box around it but can get one with, and what happened to postage rates ?

(I'll probably ask them later, but though I'd see if anyone has any thoughts here as well).

Links look the same to me?

Have you checked which seller you're getting it from? The majority of the sellers for this aren't fulfilled by Amazon (there is one).

Oops, the second link should be

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HD6ZLQ6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They're both Amazon. Might be different bits of Amazon, maybe export services, though it doesn't say on those pages.

...and yet apparently I can order this...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013HNYV8I/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

and cheapest postage is only US9.86.

I've ordered HGST drives from Amazon.com with no problems. BackBlaze rates those drives highly.

Amazon have multiple distribution centres, and not all ship internationally. Not all products are sold and fulfilled by Amazon so aren't necessarily shipped from their DC, and even if they are the seller may impose restrictions on some products.

There is no single simple reason as to why some products can be shipped overseas and others can't.

Another +1 for HGST drives. Running 5 of them in my Synology NAS, they've been running for 1141 days straight with no issues.

Nothing against HGST drives, they seem to have a good reputation, I just get Seagate cause I'm cheap, and I know I'm going to regret saying this, but have only ever had one fail on me.

Also, anyone know if they're considered to be just as good since WD bought them ? Also they have refurb HGST's available, any thoughts ?

You make good points, but still find the apparent inconsistency definitely on the annoying side.

Seagate are fine. Just make sure you have offsite backups as no disk is reliable long term.

True, and this

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/HDDSE3022/Seagate-BarraCuda-4TB-SATA-60Gbs-35-256MB-Cache-59?qr=pspy&ref=pricespy

is quite reasonable at the moment.

(backups I do, off-site is a bit more difficult...though I do have some stuff on Backblaze).

Offsite backups are moire difficult, but you have to weight it up with losing all your data. All hard drives fail, the only question is when.

I have family stuff (photos, few documents and other bits) on Backblaze. Practically all the other stuff is media which I use on Emby. Most of that is backed up in various forms as well, its just almost all in the same room. Its also a lot of terabytes. One day I'd like to get a NAS or something and put it at the opposite end of the house, but talk is cheap, unlike a NAS and at least 4 drives.

A fire can burn a NAS as well as the primary storage. Personally I have bare hard drives inside padded cases, which I store at a friends house / work / elsewhere.
