1. Illegal on NZ roads if they are fitted as a "ballast and bulb" setup. From the land transport website

"High intensity discharge (HID) conversion kits

HID conversion kits (an HID bulb with a high voltage power unit or ?ballast? which fits into the original headlamp unit in place of the original bulb with no change to the headlamp lens, reflector or housing) are illegal on any vehicle being used on New Zealand roads.

However, a complete halogen headlamp unit can be replaced with a complete HID headlamp unit provided that the replacement headlamp unit complies with approved standards. If in doubt, get advice from a vehicle lighting retailer you trust."

2. Trademe possibly, Jaycar electronics, Other slightly dubious websites and retailers.

Sold for "Novelty use only", I have bought one for another use (camping floodlighting) and it did perform well.

Having been driving a car with an aftermarket HID lights for the last 4 years I'm fairly sure the WOF and Police would have pointed it out if this was illegal.
The setup while brighter and whiter than most headlights never triggers a response from the test meters at VTNZ. I think they focus more on the spread of the beam and wether it wil dazzle other drivers

Are your lights a projector conversion or just a bulb change?

The WOF requirements include

"A headlamp must be fitted with a light source that
is specified by the vehicle manufacturer or the
headlamp manufacturer."

Don't expect the Police to care, after all using fog lamps on without fog is also illegal and it's hard to find some brands of car with their fogs off.

It's an aftermarket Bosch system installed in the car in Japan. And uses HID neon lamps with the voltage be ramped up by using inverters. No ballasts and bulbs here - brighter with a whiter light and the lamps will last at least another 100k

Again from the LTSA

There's a lot of info on various auto forums about fake Bosch systems. Bosch don't sell aftermarket.
