Off course you do. The occupants it depends if they will be home, but the house is "home" Although if the house went to Fiji for a week, no you dont!

Some will be upset, but I think a deep breath and some thought is needed.

TL;DR - Info not required by govt, invasion of privacy, poor data quality.

We should be aiming to make our society more inclusive and tolerant. That doesn't require measuring intimate aspects of identity. It requires that services be provided in a supportive and non-judgemental way.

No-one is asked about their sexuality. Everyone's sexual identity is being ignored.

The census is primarily about information gathering - not identity. If lgbtqi etc people have significantly different needs of government services than the population as a whole people then there is a basis for collecting the info. Otherwise it's info the govt doesn't need and therefore shouldn't collect.

Sexuality is generally considered to comprise a spectrum, not neat categories. More importantly, a census that requires people to declare their sexuality requires everyone to declare it, regardless of orientation. I don't see why the govt needs to know my sexuality. I consider that info highly personal. It would be the most private and personal question on the census.

If it that info was to be gathered then (like religion) there should be an option to withhold the info. Incidentally I don't think the religion question belongs in the census either.

Gender has significant data quality issues - the terminology is evolving and nebulous. There is significant subjectivity in some of the terms. It's not clear there are even really categories as much as spectra. Once you start peeling the onion it would get very complicated.

Apparently more than $4 million was used to advertise the 2018 Census. Based on comments I've seen in other networks (business, personal), this was a complete waste as many people didn't even know about it - even though every dwelling in New Zealand supposedly received its own letter.

I wonder if the census website will even let anyone fill in their form now that 6 March has been and gone? Obviously the postal delivery was never gonna be 100% successful.

$4m would be a minuscule drop really for a high profile advertising campaign. The TV would have eaten the bulk of that in no time flat (and it's time these agencies learnt that TV isn't the be all and end all of advertising). I may have heard a radio advertisement (I think) but I've certainly not seen anything online about it at all...

Well of course. Ad agency Clemenger BBDO got the contract to promote the event, and Statistics New Zealand says advertising and marketing costs have been budgeted at $4.476 million. This covers all advertising costs and media space print, television, radio, internet and “out of home” – billboards/buses/AdShells and production of all marketing materials.

A significant portion ($1.8m) of the budget will go on paid advertising placements like television spots, social media, radio spots, billboard sites and newspaper ads, Statistics New Zealand says.

It has made 19 ads for TV and 22 videos. The government agency says initial data (there will be more once the census campaign ends) shows its 30 second TV ads were seen by 2,357,120 people (aged 18 and up) more than once, while radio ads reached 266,629 people (aged 18+). Its shorter 15 second TV ads were seen more than once by an estimated 2,259,554 people.

The campaign included 62 billboards, which had estimated “daily traffic visuals” of 263,545. “We don’t get daily traffic visuals for bus back,” Stats NZ’s James Weir says.

On digital media (where it had five 15 second videos) the campaign is claiming 1,978,441 impressions, 1,283,538 video views and 752,260 completed views.

The rest of the budget went on campaign development, creative identity and positioning – the “Let’s find out” slogan for example – testing and research, production of all advertising assets including billboard skins, TV ads, letters, education materials (easy read guides) and project management.

They are advertising via twitter and facebook. But, for example, on twitter stats has 181 followers so penetration is minimal.

Not sure about snapchat and others

I've seen and heard radio and TV advertising and there has been mainstream news coverage (web, TV, radio, print).

I've seen and heard radio and TV advertising and there has been mainstream news coverage (web, TV, radio, print).

Stats NZ has 11k followers on Twitter. Regardless, advertising on these platforms (and Linked, Instagram) doesn't target followers only. It can be targeted any group by region, device, followers, etc regardless of following the account or not.

I didn't see any adds for it.
I only knew because of this thread.
Someone else in the house got the form with the code, put it aside and forgot about it.
When I asked around after seeing this thread, they then remembered and pulled it out.
I don't watch adds on TV if I can avoid it, I do see the adds on Geekzone 🙂

According to the lass at the other end of the 0800 number, the answer is "No."

The dwelling that was unoccupied on census night does not get counted.

SWMBO and I received forms at more than one house. The one where we weren't on census night is now recorded as unoccupied on the night, so the census folk won't waste time and effort on follow-up visits.

I wonder how much of that money went overseas to the overseas online advertising companies, as I saw a heap of online ads about it. It seemed to be almost all online advertising, as I didn't see much other advertising. Although 4 million isn't a huge amount for a entire country, and that is only the cost of a couple of Auckland houses these days.

Apparently many elderly haven't been able to fill in the forms. It would be ironic is the census ended up showing that NZ had very few elderly, and that NZ doesn't have an aging population at all. Especially as the census is supposed to show the government where money should be spent.
