Off topic but I have a question that relates to this. Also to Sky's seeming inability to keep up with technology. Do capable IT people all go off and start their own businesses and are the ones who work in corporate IT departments useless no-hopers? I am not suggesting they are, just asking. Why are companies like NZME and Sky seemingly so out of touch with technical developments? Why do they have so little awareness of the end user experience? Is this an IT issue or just poor management?

Both. From a development point of view at least, there is often a significant divide between management and development in terms of technical skill. It's very difficult for technical people to get in to what is seen as a business-focused role, and there is often little interest from developers in working in those roles. I'm not sure why they resist pushing back against management - I did, but then I'm not currently employed, so take what you want from that :)

Sort of back on topic, the Herald's (news.com.au) article about Brett Kavanaugh's most recent senate committee appearance was surprisingly balanced, unlike TVNZ's 12pm (ABC) and 6pm stories. They've all omitted significant relevant detail however. Trump's Tweet was very accurate, if you focus on the points he made, not his unwavering support from Kavanaugh, which is all that gets reported.

I have Sky, the end user experience always works. Im not restarting the Sky Box, Im not getting errors, or BSOD, Im not getting buffering. It always works. Show me a computer that is like that.

What about all the horror stories about Sky Go, no HD or 5.1 on Neon, other things Sky never heard of that have been standard with other services for years? I don't have recent experience of Sky, but from the complaints I still see here on a regular basis, I don't get the impression that they have made it very far out of the 90's yet.

In any case, I was only using them as an example. There are others. And I was just asking a question. Is there actually a difference in the quality of corporate IT people?

Ive used Sky Go on and off, works fine, errors are rare. I dont use Neon, I thought that was HD now?

Sky is a tall poppy, everyone wants to hate them. Its rock solid from a users point of view, IME. Its a cliche, but it always works, Its not $15 per month for everything that exists, which is the problem. 1990's or 2018's won't solve that as its unsolvable. Not unless we regulate actors and sportspeople at $22 our hour.

Plus, Sky is just the conduit. The prices that it pays come from the creators.

So after some recommendations in this thread for newsroom I followed that news site for a while. Initially I found it quite good but eventually gave up on it as it is very stale and coverage is very thin. Looking at it today, most of the stories are days or weeks old and several current events have zero coverage.

I've settled on radionz.co.nz now. It's pretty good. The news has decent coverage and is current and the commenty bits aren't idiotic at all.

Can't say I find RNZ to be any better than the NZ Herald. I do have it as my home page on my browser. I was OK for a while but recently I've find more often than not I'm finding the Herald site is better.

Just something I've noticed in the past month or so, the NZME radio stations when doing their news intro used to say "from the newstalkzb newscentre" to now "from nzherald...", I would not be surprised if news disappears from Newstalk ZB's website around the same time as the paywall goes up.

Where do you think Classic Hits, ZM and Newstalk ZB evolved from? That's the RNZ Commercial I'm talking about (as opposed to National Radio or Concert FM - which I agree has never had commercials).

No, the NZBC got carved out into TVNZ and Radio NZ. The latter was responsible for both commercial and public service radio stations up until the privatisation of 1996.
