neb: I've found that almost anything is less bad than Google in terms of returning bogus results.

Definitely worth a +1 for that piece of wisdom!

This was in Brave. Google, on the other hand, actually searches for "formatresponse" like it was asked to do.

I've been trying to work out if an exclamation mark in an email address if valid or not.  Xero likes to throw one in to peoples invoice import email address

The "!" on the right side of @ is a bang path - in the old UUCP email it indicates which hosts to go through to get to a specific server: bang path (catb.org).

For example, I used to run a BBS. We didn't have our own domain back then (mid-90s) but we hosted email accounts. Our email was something like uucp.net!lonline and the uucp.net host knew to route emails to a specific mailbos accessible through my BBS software.

good to know

Xero's email addresses are often similar to the following:

bills.inbox.xero.s9dfn9x.d9-3!d03vn.9nn30d@xerofiles.xero.com

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

I despise modern search engines.

That's because they've been re-done to handle natural-language queries, "how do I kill my partner without getting caught", "how do I get a dead gerbil out", that sort of thing, so they try really hard to return some sort of result even if it's not a precise match for what you asked for. It's fuzzy matching, not grep.

Unfortunately I don't know of any grep-style search engines left, although I've found that almost anything is less bad than Google in terms of returning bogus results.

I found that the systems persistently fail to understand what I’m actually asking for.

Perhaps your language is unnatural?

Outlook has found yet another way to drive me bonkers.

I'm receiving quite a few emails with error logs in the body. The useful bit is at the bottom. If I grab the scrollbar and pull it to the bottom, then when I release it pings back up near the top and has only scrolled one page. Of course, it doesn't actually take focus, so if I hit End on the keyboard it jumps to my oldest message instead of the bottom of the current one.

I'm sure this used to work until "new and improved" Outlook came along...

Dumb*ss wheelibin and recycling collectors who leave the lids open when it's pissing with rain.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

im sure they dont do it intentionally, and they are not going to get out and go back and close them.

You'd also expect it to be empty - and don't they have a drain hole in the bottom?

The ones they use here don't have a drain hole.

Back in the old days the arm on the truck moved at a speed such that the lid would shut, but these days they fling it down so quickly that it never gets a chance.

Interesting - I guess nothing a 40mm holesaw wouldn't fix - it's not like you are supposed to put liquids in them anyway. On topic - it would annoy me that they weren't made with a drain hole.

Well I suppose the good news is that the inside of my bin is now slightly more clean! The water I tipped out was pretty dirty...

a drain in the bottom is the perfect place for cockroaches, ants, mice and rats to get into it.

Wheelybins are an “improvement”.

When I was a lad, the bin men walked down the drive, hoisted the bins on their backs, carried them out to the road and emptied them into the truck before returning them to outside the back door, lids affixed.

That’s why they got big tips at Christmas from every house on their route.

Now things have been “improved” in that unique modern sense of the word that means “got worse”! Like banking.
