Me and the Mrs went and looked at six lovely kittens today. Coincidentally, they were born on the same day that Blackie died (8 November).

We've decided to adopt two of them when they're old enough to leave mum. Our house has been so empty without a cat.

When we moved here to this house, Blackie came with us from my old flat. So he was such a part of this place for the five years that we've been here.

She only eats the best food. Most expensive food.
I tried to put her on a diet. No luck. Stopped feeding her completely. She would just catch food and get fatter.

What food?

Science Diet.

Hills?  Same stuff our kitty is on.  Quite surprised she isn't improving if that's the case!

BurningBeard: Re: Science Diet from Hill's.

I showed these to my partner (who is a vet/scientist) and she said while the articles make good points, there were some red flags and blanket statements made.

- Any cat that gets a blockage or infection is either not given water with their food at all (quite common) or their bowl is smoothed over with dry biscuits and the cat is free to binge (often without water).  Correct dry food portions (a half cup to a full cup only) will prevent this almost completely.  She said various other things can lead up to infections and blockages.  Males get a lot of blockages and females get infections...Mainly due to the fact the males tract is longer and the female tract is shorter.

catinfo.org:
Before you get too confused and frustrated when reading this section, I will say at the outset:  I would much rather see a cat eat any canned food versus any dry food - regardless of quality level of the canned or dry food.  This includes Friskies, 9-Lives, Fancy Feast, etc., canned options.

Ironically, Fancy Feast has a reputation among vet circles as one of the worst things you can feed your cat.  Mainly because the salt content is extreme and causes many of the health problems described above as being caused by dry food.

- A cat will drink if it's thirsty regardless of the water content in it's food and as mentioned above, problems arise most commonly by lack of a water source provided to an inside cat.   Every cat is different.  A cat's water intake can also be increased, simply by moving it's water bowl away from it's food.  Some cats are more comfortable with a separate water source, where as most owners will have them side by side.  Not a bad thing, but your cat isn't about to walk up to you and tell you what he or she prefers.

- They recommend raw food alternatives and making cat food from scratch (which can be great and is better).  But owners almost always stuff it up and end up doing more damage than good.  It's a delicate balance with raw food which varies between animals and most pet owners don't have the energy or know-how to make them work properly to ensure their pet is getting a proper balanced diet.

---

We are sticking with Hills. We portion the food properly twice daily and she definitely drinks enough water (there are three bowls in different parts of the house). Hazel does get the odd piece of raw chicken to chew on as a treat...But other than that, it's 100% dry.
