rb99:

Call me cynical but it sounds like there won't be much leveling of the playing fields with this online gst thing

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12070643

"I don't foresee there is going to be a huge spike in prices but what I do think is that local retailers are going to start to make up some of the margins they've been losing over the last couple of years due to GST loophole." Florkowski said.

"By retailers starting to increase some of these prices, I think it's going to be part and parcel of the level playing field because the online GST loop has been closed so they won't be competing purely in price just to be within the market."

online is going up so retail has to go up as well.

If they do that then they just put back price advantage online has. If the price variance narrows, its more sales for them at todays prices. But yes, some may up the price if they prefer higher margins and lower sales volume

Looks like this might be a reality? https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/113360504/amazon-tipped-to-open-up-its-australian-website-to-kiwis-next-month

Unsure if this will prevent us from ordering from amazon.com, or how the amazon.com.au experience differs from when it first started.

My Dad (who lives in the GC) mentioned that if its not available from the .com.au site it just ships from amazon.com anyway? But that's probably for things that ships/sells from Amazon.com

Pardon me if I appear cynical, but the article starts with a quote from someone who "heads Wellington business ... which helps companies get set up to sell goods through Amazon"

Very conveniently placed article, I think.
