Pretty hard to sleep when the bed is shaking you awake. I guess that's the bonus of living on the top floor of an apartment building.

Yes, those two big ones tonight were fairly full on. Nothing like what everyone here would have experienced on Saturday morning though. Little follow up aftershocks seem to keep coming but aren't as big as the 2 between 11pm-12am.

We are in the UK and booked to come to Christchurch on the 31st October.

Firstly, sympathy to all of you suffering the aftershocks. Hope all goes well for you.

Now our local GP practice recommended swine flu vaccine for travel to Australia/NZ but we could see no reason for this. Cynically we suspected that the Health Service is trying to shift all the unused vaccine they bought for the global epidemic that never happened. How serious (if at all) is the swine flu in Christchurch? Be a shame to come over and catch it if we could have been immunised.

We will try and wait for a while before checking that our proposed accomodation in Christchurch is still fully functional; they will have more pressing things to think about at the moment.

Again, sympathy and good wishes to all over there struggling through the aftermath at the moment.

Yes, swine flu is the main seasonal flu in New Zealand this year. Definitely work having the vaccine.

Strange that hasn't been prominent in the news.

Probably not good for the tourist trade.

I've been reading further news about the conditions and it sounds really tough at the moment.
Anyone who has no water and has to build an emergency toilet has my deepest sympathy.
Hope the aftershocks die down quickly.

It's just not the fast spreading pandemic they always predicted - more a heavy flu variation, but yep - it's definitely here and been a lot of case this flue season.

I've had enough. But what can you do? Work is worse. It's a multi story building and I'm on level 1 of 3 which makes me feel even more unsafe. I don't want to think of 2 stories toppling on top of me.

Last night was awful. Up until then we'd just ridden out the aftershocks but we were running for the door way 3 times last night.

Like so many, I need sleep. On the edge of my seat and not enjoying the ride one little bit.

Still we've been very fortunate to suffer only minor damage to our own properties. One person from work is now without his home and having to find alternative housing for his family.

I hope this will end soon, but it doesn't sound like that's expected.

What I would like to know is how much richter an earthquake is felt in Timaru that centres in Chch? Ie would a 5.4 feel like a 4.4 or 3.4, etc?

I feel most of the aftershocks here, and last nights 5.4 and 5.2 are still quite massive down here, likewise the 5.4 at 3:30am which I was awake for.

The 5.2 and 5.4 kept me awake for a couple of hours, but once I finally got to sleep I slept through to the morning. It's a bit of a worry when you get so used to the aftershocks you can sleep through a 5.4 quake! Even the cat doesn't seem to worried about them now, when we ran for shelter when the 5.2 hit about 11:20pm she just looked at us as though we were crazy.
