Another one is "if I arrange for a courier will you ship it?" for a pickup-only auction. Sure, if you deal with that part of it I'm quite happy to ship, I just didn't want to go through the hassle myself which is why I'd listed it as pickup-only.

I had some chickens listed for sale recently. "Are you driving to Palmerston North any time soon"?

"No, but gimme your address there, I'll write it on a bit of paper and give it to one of the chickens, keep an eye out for their imminent arrival".

Please let us know how you go.  6.5 years is getting on for electronics, but I agree that you should get more than that out of $3k item.  Should the customer have to foot a $500 bill to have to breathe life back into it?  Hmm?

If you're a Consumer member, this is the point at which you'd write to them telling them about the problem and they'd contact the vendor. They publish a bunch of cases like this in every issue pointing out what your rights are.

Yeah, I am reasonably comfortable in dealing with these situations. I've sent the receipt, explained my position clearly and firmly, whilst remaining pleasant and calm, and linked to the article stating consumers view on lifespan of an oven. I don't expect too much resistance, but I am confident, if there is, a Disputes Tribunal hearing should clear it up. I tend to be pretty pragmatic when it comes to things, and I feel consumer laws in NZ are overly in favour of consumers, and tend to look at the suggestions by consumer with a grain of salt, but 5-7 years falls well short of what I consider reasonable. The tech said it looked like the PCB sustained some heat damage.

A couple of days ago I was riding my bike back home for lunch and the cell phone rang. I stopped and it was an Indian guy. I had a hard job trying to hear what he was actually saying and figuring what it was about but it seemed he wanted to send some IT information. Where was he? Darwin !!! His number +618-8998-4299 if anyone happens to know how to trace it.

"OK, look on the website for my email address." I said. I repeated it a few times then told him the battery was going flat and hung up.

So where did he get my cell phone number from? And no, it isn't on any web site.

Most likely a scam.

Where did he get your phone number? For all we know it could be a script calling a sequence of New Zealand numbers, and if one happens to answer the call goes to this person or team.

I have received quite a few from Australian numbers. Sometimes the dialogue goes like this:

Caller: "Hi, I am calling on behalf of "XYZ Plc. I am talking to you today because you have searched and shown interest in some investments like crypto. I'd like to talk to you a"

Me: "Fark off"

The best at lunchtime, "You have a problem with your Windows that needs fixing."

Me, "OK I'll boot it up." and I carry on eating lunch and reading a book. A few minutes later, "Oh it has crashed again." and a repeat until they give up.

Or another time being unable to understand what was said, "Do you have someone who speaks English?" They hung up fast on that one. That is probably the best response to use as it is polite(?) and they know they are useless.

Trying to find football boots of suitable quality and within a reasonable budget for a 17 year old who plays for both a top club side and his school 1st eleven.

Almost everywhere is out of stock of decent boots. Low end models (we tried some) fall apart quickly and need to be replaced/returned/refunded.

Good boots are not available to try on anywhere, so have to be ordered blind from overseas. Manufacturers are changing model shapes/designs to "keep up with the market", so the boots that have been good for the last couple of years, now don't fit well - baggy in the mid-foot, or wide in the toebox etc.

Finally found a pair that are "in stock and available for immediate dispatch" with Nike NZ.

Ordered and assumed it'd be a couple of days, if they're in stock and available. Estimated shipping date: 27th June. Subject to customs clearance as being imported. grrr....

And all that for the low, low cost of $220 a pair for the second model down. Top model is just under $400 a pair!!!!

He plays two games a week and trains 4 nights a week. He really needs more than one pair. I am NOT shelling out $400+ for two pairs of boots that will arrive in the last half of the season.

I had one of these in the past week. Displayed as from an NZ number. Indian chap had my name and started pretty much as above. He tried to insist I'd signed up for this. Wasn't happy when I said he was full of crap, I wasn't interested, please delete my number, and then I hung up.

ETA: obviously bought a list or there's been a hack, as he knew my name to go with my phone number.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

I persistently get calls from Darwin in Australia. I block the numbers every time. I know two people who live in Australia. Neither in Darwin or anywhere near.

So not unusual after all (Darwin). In that case the answer will be, "Have you got someone who speaks English?"

The laggyness and horrid compression on the call makes it clear its over some shoddy voip service from a long way away and not a legit call from darwin.

I've changed to a whitelist due to the number of scam/spam calls I get. Now when the phone rings, it's usually actually something useful.

Meanwhile, the new emoji in Teams annoy me. It's like they're trying to look more realistic or something, when they're fundamentally supposed to be cartoony. It also annoys me that they just changed without warning, and without an app update. Is the Teams client just embedding web pages or something? (Although at 263 MB I hope it's doing more than that...)

I decline calls from overseas or anonymous numbers and it has always been pretty effective at avoiding nuisance calls thus far.

Unfortunately I just received one this morning from a Wellington number. I'm guessing they are spoofing NZ numbers to make people pick up when they otherwise wouldn't.

I don't really want to limit incoming calls to known contacts only, because I occasionally get legitimate calls from callers who are not in my contacts list.
