Not a movie, but over the weekend I've re-watched seasons 1 & 2 of Boardwalk Empire. Great show, except for the number of actors from The Sopranos they recycled, IMO.

The Avengers - 8.5/10 really enjoyed this one. Great humour and I like the mix of heroes. The hulk was very good and probably the pick of the characters for me. Only negative was Fury. I thought he would be a lot more aggressive or something based on his name. I like Joss Weldon movies/TV series and hopefully firefly will come back one day.

Star Trek: Into Darkness 8/10: I really enjoyed the first instalment of the new version of Star Trek and this one was also very good. The casting for Khan was excellent and while the lens flare was pretty full on in the Deck area it did not annoy me enough to dislike the film. It will be interesting so see how many of these they make, it could be heaps if the director wants to and they keep up this level of enjoyment for the viewers. I went to St Lukes this time and the level of sound was just right and nice to have almost a full theatre even if it was cheap Tuesday.

Not as bad as IMDB folks paint it, 6.5/10... But really there's no reason for Jeniffer Lopez to be on the film, and even less that police officer.

Personally, theres no reason for Jennifer Lopez to be in any movie. Terrible

I've had some enforced time off work lately, so I've had time to do a little film watching:

Iron Sky - 2/10
Ridiculous. Horrible. The trailer makes it seem like a deliberately bad film that might be funny, but it's only partly right. The most astonishing thing is that I watched it all the way to the end, but I think I was just optimistically hoping it was going to get better (it didn't). The plot, if you're interested, is that Nazis set up a moon base before the end of the 2nd World War, and have been camped up there all these years. When the vacuous Sarah Palin-like President sends a mission to the moon for popularity purposes, the astronauts discover the moon base, which triggers off an attack on earth. Gimmicks which promise, but don't deliver, include the discovery that a cellphone contains enough processing power to allow the Nazis to finish their ultimate weapon, and a paradoy of the Hitler-rage scene from Downfall (just a few years late to that meme guys...) Awful. Avoid.

Compliance - 7/10
A pretty good film, albeit with a dubious "based on real events" tag that is supposed to help heighten the tension. I guess it's to try and head off the suggestions of "that would never happen", but it's not necessary - I guess I'm cynical enough to believe that some people are just that gullible. It's set in a fast food restaurant where a mix of young kids and "lifers" are working on a busy Friday night when the shift manager gets a call from someone claiming to be a police officer investigating (by phone) an alleged theft of money from a customer. The subsequent 80 minutes unravel to reveal the extent to which some people unquestioningly accede to authority. There's still a few unbelievable moments, but there's still enought that is believable to make you think and feel a little bit uncomfortable.

Black Swan - 8.5/10
Or to give it it's correct title, Psychos on Tippytoes. Man - ballerinas are scary! This film goes in the category of "Watch Once and Never Again." Not because it's bad (in fact, quite the opposite), but because you don't need to see it twice. Natalie Portman does a great job as a young ballerina living with an overbearing and protective mother, and terrified of her own shadow as she auditions for the lead role in Swan Lake. Not surprisingly, it's less about ballet and more about the challenges of ambition and identity, about mental illness and self-worth. As a study in mental breakdown, it's great, and there are scenes where you will wonder what is real and what isn't, drawing you into the terror the main character is experiencing. It's a bit slow in places, but the story is pretty gripping. I also think the lewdness of the sex scenes, which I recall being played up by the media when the film was released, aren't really anything notable, and not in the least gratuitous. The whole story has a grittiness to it which helps to make the film feel more real.

Fast and Furious 5 - 7/10
With the new F&F movie coming out last week, I persuaded my wife to watch the previous installment, which I had already seen. She hadn't bothered to watch Fast 4 (which is a good call), but I thought F&F5 is not too bad, and leads into the next film (which I'm planning to see on Tuesday).
I've watched all the F&F films in the franchise, and at risk of sounding ridiculous for comparing them to Star Trek films, they seem to share a similar (if inverse) pattern - the popular convention was that every second Star Trek film was a good 'un; for F&F films, the odd-numbered films are the better ones: The Fast and The Furious, Tokyo Drift, Fast and Furious 5. (On the downside, this doesn't bode well for the latest film, but then Star Trek: Nemesis was a bag of rubbish, so I guess there's an exception to every rule...)
Being a F&F film, there's little point in talking about plot. There are fast cars, outrageous stunts, and snappy (if dumb) dialogue (sample line: "this just went from Mission:Impossible to Mission: Freaking Insanity!") It has a kind of Ocean's Eleven feel to it, with a large ensemble cast, but I enjoy the interplay between Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, and even The Rock brings his own "charm" to the screen. It's no Shakespearean solliliquoy, but no-one's pretending otherwise.

Margin Call - 8/10
I'd heard good things about this film starring Kevin Spacey, not least of which is the cast, which also includes Zachary Quinto, Paul Bettany, Demi Moore, Jeremy Irons, Simon Baker, Stanley Tucci, and Mary McDonnell. In short, it's a film about accounting. Actually, it's more to do with the start of the Global Financial Crisis, but accounting is still involved, making it my favourite accounting-based film of all time. If I'm honest, though, it's less about accounting and finance and more about human decency and survival. All the cast give a great performance, injecting suspense and human feeling into what would be a pretty dry subject in any other situation. If it hasn't already, it would make for a great dramatic stageplay.
Some basic plot details - a financial trading firm lays off some of its employees as part of a trimming exercise, and lets go one of its risk analysts who is in the midst of discovering that the company ratio of debt to assets is dangerously high. He passes his work onto a junior analyst, who completes the work and raises the alarm bells. The information rises through the company's chain of command, eliciting panic as they try to work out how to salvage the situation.

Men In Black 3 - Great movie, as always with the MIB movies.. 10/10 for humour and 10/10 overall!

haha... i haven't watched it myself so i can't judge :)

I did however have the unfortunate experience of watching Jack Reacher.

What a load of dribble, I went in without any expectations and came out even less then impressed. Cruise has been completely miscast, this is a role that should have gone to someone like Jason Statham perhaps.

Jack Reacher - Mind numbingly boring 2/10

For the first time in years I visited a movie rental place and got a DVD out. Simply because after looking hard on iTunes we couldn't find anything interesting, and seriously, the last few movies we watched were pretty crap. So I paid the $8 (almost double the iTunes) and got The Sapphires, which is not available on iTunes.

8.5/10. Seriously good fun. Worth it.

Went and saw the new Star Trek movie at the AK Imax 3D. My wife and I both enjoyed it. One this is this is a 2.35:1 movie but it looks like it was "ZoomoVisioned" (what TV3 does to their HD movies) to fit the Imax screen format which made the facial closeups too close.

Silver linings playbook - a near perfect rom com (for the different characters / screen play rather than the plot), if you're not into drama/rom com don't watch

warm bodies - good fun. if you're into teen flicks. if not don't watch

Total Recall (the remade version) 5/10 (original version 8/10) Just doesn't match the original in acting, 'realism', or storyline IMO.

Les Miserables (with Russell crowe) 3/10 (very) Bad singing/music and a completely disjointed storyline ruined it. Don't know why it was so popular as a movie, especially compared to previous versions, and the book.

The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey. 5/10 because it's the first part of a three part movie, and it seems like a rehash of The Fellowship Of The Ring to me.
Nothing like the book (storyline) IMO.

Edit:

Rabbit Proof Fence. 6/10 Good Australian film, seems a bit like a documentary in places..
