Speaking of Kmart - can anyone access their site at the moment? This is what I'm getting (and it's annoying):

We'll be back soon!

Sorry the site is out of action at the moment.

Please check back in a few minutes.

If you have an order enquiry, please contact us at onlineshop@kmart.com.au for Australia customers.
Please contact us at onlineshop@kmart.co.nz for New Zealand customers.

You get that error when trying to open new.kmart.co.nz.

Todays annoy: giving someone some instructions for something they need help with and they keep talking over the top of you with stuff that’s not correct which you have to correct them on so they understand what you’re trying to assist with. Had one just now where I had to ask them to stop and let me finish

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

It loads but I cant log in. They did email a while back that the wish list was changing so hopefully it will actually work now. Once I can log in.

Eventually logged in, but seems that my wishlist is now mixed up with the one from the AU site and its not showing my order history at all.

Sigh, Guess I will have to get in touch with them.

Technofreak: I understand the complications and have read that thread. From what I can tell the complications are caused by having a card system. It still doesn't explain why they couldn't have a point of sale set up like every other business.

Because then every bus would need to be online all the time and they'd get slapped with huge (relative to the size of the payment) transaction fees on each tag-on.

AT can't even properly manage an NFC card read with overnight reconciliation, I can't imagine what a disaster trying to do contactless card payments would be.

Handsomedan:

Paying a recipient at another bank goes through the clearing system which only operates Mon-Fri excl Public holidays. This will all change when the NZ clearing system moves to 7-day settlement next year.

I must say it'll be refreshing to have the banks move away from rows of bespectacled clerks with pencil and paper who only work Mon-Fri excl Public holidays to 24/7 processing. Will they ease into the transition via punched cards or go straight to electronic tabulators?

Just need to ease a building in next to them...

Speed? Something that annoys me is someone hops on a bus, pushes their wallet to the reader and hears "Try again too many cards". Wait for the reader to setup again, then try another two times with the same results. After the third attempt, they then fumble with the wallet to find the Snapper card to finally get it to read.

That's something that anticollision should be dealing with... AT can do that even with just a single card presented, every single time I get a bus anywhere there's several cases of misreads with accompanying wait for it to reset and then possibly another misread. If there's a queue the driver will often wave the person through just to get the bus moving again.

In terms of read speeds, when NYC transport (the MTA) was investigating this they realised there was no way they could handle the volume of traffic via any kind of contactless reader and looked at what it'd take to do passive reads, so read the tag as people walked through a gateway. From memory it would have taken an 18' tunnel to complete the read at walking pace.

They, like many European countries, do probabilistic auditing, conductors doing occasional checks on longer/more expensive runs and random station-lockdown checks on subways and similar. With NZ, or at least Auckland's, lethargic train system you can get away with tag-on/tag-off, but it'd never work at volume (Vienna, for example, does around a billion passengers a year, with quarter of a million riding at peak hours).

What does the time have to do with the temperature?
