That there is no backspace key on the Apple laptop. Love them or hate them, they have some weird ideas.

It's not all that weird in context. It dates back to the keyboard for the Apple IIGS, which was the first Apple II to have a point-and-click GUI and needed a way to delete files etc. You don't backspace a file, you delete it, so the key was marked Delete (this keyboard lacked the 6-key block with Home, End, etc).

Still weird. On a normal computer, backspace and delete do different things.

What's really weird is that while Apple label it a delete key, it actually functions the same as a windows backspace key (deleting text to the left of the cursor, not the right).  In order to get it to behave like the windows delete key you have to use Function/Delete.

Annoying. I mentioned that on an Yahoo Apple group and I got bagged about it. So opted out. I prefer Apple for a number of reasons but I dislike the devoted's opinions. Ford vs Holden, National vs Labour and so on.  I prefer to sit on the fence and go from there. No flavour is better then the other they just taste different.

I had to smile about the long journey to HAM - because it is the IATA 3-letter code for Hamburg airport.

Lol. I went to Houston a couple of times, en route to Louisiana  One of a few hubs I went through each year. At ChCh airport (Christchurch) they took an age to find it. IAH is not quite Houston, but quite poor

Get that but its 2022 or 2002 backspace and delete are two options not one

I get emails from Pizza Hut. They used to be x deal for $29. Ok, I finished school so I can assess that. Now the deals are 3 pizzas for $11 each. $11 sounds cheap, and it is, but the "deal" isn't.

I guess its like gidgets are $1 each, sounds cheaper than 10 for TEN DOLLARS

Backspace moves the carriage one character position to the left while delete, character code 0x7F or seven ones, punches the paper tape at all seven holes, deleting whatever was there before.

You're welcome.

ROFL. Seriously though, backspace removes the character before the cursor and moves the cursor one position to the left, while delete will remove the character after the cursor, keeping the cursor on its position, shifting the trailing characters one position to the left.

This, of course, applies to Baudot (ITA2) as well but only requires 5 holes.  (It also requires less wide paper tape, thus making it a much more eco-friendly character-set than this newfangled ASCII stuff that the kids are into these days 😝)

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

It's only called IAH because HOU was already taken - by the airport no-one uses.

Yes, I have noticed that, but couldn't you achieve the same thing by positioning the cursor before pressing backspace?

If there has to be both a backspace and delete button then I would have thought it would be more user friendly to place the two keys next to each other.

Yes, you could but then you have to move the cursor in one position before hitting delete, which means more work.

Ge0rge: I recall being told years ago that "if you come across more than three asshats in one day, perhaps they aren't the asshat".

I wonder if it could equally be applied to idiots on the road...

I did consider that, but as I was doing marginally over the speed limit on cruise control (GPS monitored company car) and was passing others and moving to the left when appropriate, I thought I was doing OK.

The said asshats were all in way more of a hurry than the speed limit would allow and were all (without any exaggeration) ducking and diving through the traffic. I wonder if they were all tradies heading to jobs that they were late for? Only reason I can see for driving like that at 5.30am.
