Just yesterday they didn't give any indication on Twitter it was so close (just said "once consolidation USA is available we will notify customers"). I actually had 2 items waiting at the US warehouse, luckily I decided to give it another day.

Interestingly although I was notified because they closed the NZ Post feedback on the idea http://feedback.nzpost.co.nz/forums/173601-youshop/suggestions/3245879-parcel-consolidation?tracking_code=7640b9015bb067d29f9346adf0b03a1f , I didn't yet receive any direct notification even though I ticked yes to "give permission for my contact details, including my email address, to be used to send me information on special offers, products and services that New Zealand Post thinks may be of interest to me." I did ask on Twitter, so I guess their post on Twitter could be argued the way they notified customers.

I have to say the spend of Youshop is great at the moment

Ordered product from amazon last week, youshop got it on friday, email saying being shipped to NZ on Saturday and tracking shows that it is being sorted in NZ at the moment

Looking at the details, some people including me are going to end up worse off with consolidation, as they also got rid of the multi parcel discount for everyone but China where they still don't have consolidation https://www.nzpost.co.nz/tools/youshop/youshop-pricing/consolidation .

Since the multi-parcel discount used to apply for for parcels at any combination of warehouse, obviously anyone with a/ parcel/s at the US, UK and China warehouses will be worse off.

But as the base price is $25 this means you often won't save with only 2 parcels compared to the parcel discount. E.g. if you have 2 parcels close to 500g, in the past it would be $28.50 ($17.25*2-$6). Now it will be $34.50 ($25+$4.75*2) or the same price it will be without consolidation and the old discount! Even if the weight will end up under 500g, you're still worse off. Now you will pay $29.75 ($25+$4.75).

In my case I also only have 2 parcels. In the past I would have paid $47.50 with the discount ($36.25+$17.25-$6). Now I will probably pay $48.75! (The volumetric weight on the larger parcel is a fair amount more than the actual weight.) So kendo, the answer is no :-( I guess I could look around for something else to buy, it'll basically be free shipping to NZ provided it doesn't weight too much and isn't too large.

The cases you will often save will be if you were paying for a fair amount more volumetric weight then you needed which you can sufficiently reuse (e.g. you have a parcel that is 3 kg volumetric and 2 kg real weight, and another parcel which is tiny but 0.9 kg). Or with more than 2, in which case you may save even if you don't have extra volumetric.

Mind you, although I'm sure they can raise prices at any time, I can't help wondering if you already had items at the warehouse or they were on the way, and were planning to use it, you may be able to convince them to let you for the next few days.

Yeah the different addresses is another loss, although not a big deal to me. Not that I ever used the multiple warehouses, but I may have. Although the multiple warehouses discount thing was always a bit odd IMO. Perhaps what they should have done is set the base price at $23.75. That way it's only people with 2 parcels who can't save any weight that will pay more. (And also multiple addresses or multiple warehouses.)

Anecdotal data from a shipito experience. Total cost to ship two pairs of shoes as one package to shipito's Oregon warehouse (tax free on Amazon), have them repacked out of the shoe boxes into the smallest possible box, and then shipped via USPS air mail = $53 NZD ($40 USD) Last time I had one pair of shoes send via youshop, it cost me $46 NZD. So the savings are considerable, based on the repack (remove all packaging and put in smallest box) option.

Notes on the experience:

Cost breakdown = $10 for membership, $5 for special request to repack, $1 for send out cost, $24.06 postage.
When the package arrives they take photos and put it on your package page. When they do a special request to repack removing all packaging, they take a picture of the packed box open (so I could see both pairs of shoes) and the packed box sealed (so I could see how well it was boxed).
Their free account does not do consolidation, so I paid the $10 for virtual mailbox as I expected consolidation to include repacking one package. After all, you can pay $2 * 2 to consolidate two packages, and in the process get the same result as the $5 special request if the contents of the two packages had come together in one package. If you try to consolidate one package with the "remove all packaging" option, it states a minimum of two packages are required.
Their free account does not ship to Oregon, only taxable states, so the virtual mailbox also saves the taxes as it enables Oregon shipping. I guess the virtual mailbox works out in the long run. But the weird restrictions and tiers, and what not come across as a bit of an arbitrary revenue generator.

All in all, it was a little confusing and the web site looks a little clumsy, but all that remains now is for the package to be dispatched and to arrive intact. If Youshop offered the ability to repack and remove packaging, I'd consider trying that next time.

What courier did they use in NZ/was it trackable?

You can see the shipito prices here. It's $10 a month, or $50 a year. But even as a one-off it makes sense because of they force all the useful options into the paid virtual mailbox scheme. Like the only state tax free warehouse, Oregon, is virtual mailbox only. And consolidation is virtual mailbox only. The free option would have been more expensive, because of this, for me.

No idea what courier they use in NZ. All it lists is the US postal options, and it lists around 10. I chose the cheapest, and it has tracking. Although I have to go to the shipito web site to see the status. I doubt it covers any detail outside of the US.

Got notified of the new consolidation from a friend
Read through all the new and updated documentation and came to the same conclusion as above - it is now more expensive to send 2 parcels due to the loss of multiple parcel discount
The unanswered question I now have is - how do they consolidate? Parcels come in and get put into a bigger box (boxes inside a box) or are items remove from the box to be put in a new box?

I'll try this soon, few items I have wanted from the USA that were too expensive to get as single shipments

AFAIK, the shipping options shown are what they use. If it's DHL Express, it'll be DHL Express.

The general unknown is Airmail Economy/Priority/Express. This will use the postal system, but possibly not USPS. It may enter via another method. (If it is USPS, it may be some special bulk mail, not the normal methods you'll find on the website.) In the past, they used to bulk ship to somewhere in Europe, possibly Belgium or the UK at least for economy (but I think priority did this as well). But from reading more, I'm not sure if that's still what they do. (one of the comments here suggest it isn't https://forum.shipito.com/en/14731/airmail-economy-same-as-airmail-priority ) Either way, it will use the postal system (I believe Express is/was EMS), just don't expect it to be like USPS. Although obviously once it reaches NZ, NZ Post will deal with it (well if it's EMS, CourierPost).
