Makes sense - the YouShop facility is actually a DHL logistics centre, so i'd imagine they just add all the YouShop items to the next DHL shipment (I don't think they use containers for airfreight though) - since DHL now does direct flights to Auckland because of the sheer volume of freight, I can't see them ever having to wait long.

Hey all!

Ok so it took about 3days before they shipped my item then about 3-4 to arrive in New Zealand.

Got an email from YouShop yesterday saying the item arrived in NZ and is at customs.

Then it was delivered today! (Christchurch).

Great service! (Just need to remember to use geekzone affiliate link next time ;) )

Any confirmed reports from youshop regarding customs fees they charge if you get pinged? Can you sort out customs fees yourself like you can now if you import something from anywhere in the world and pay customs directly without going via dhl etc...

Do whatever you want to do man.

I ordered couple of things via newegg and have it shipped to my prezoom address (amazon does not sell these directly themselves even in US) as it's about 4 ~ 5 KG in total and the service would come out much cheaper compared to youshop. Will let everyone know of shipping cost and experience with prezoom.

Newegg accepted my credit card fine (I think). Used prezoom for shipping address and NZ address for billing. Let's see If I managed to fool newegg.

edit - just got another email from newegg stating order is on hold, as they could not verify billing or shipping information on the card presented. They are good.

going to try and use AirNZ One Smart card or my Visa debit, both of which have not let me down with overseas transactions with touch to crack retailers like newegg.

Do whatever you want to do man.

My order is for the paperwhite so yes needs YouShop or similar I notice that the ETA for new orders has now gone further out so looks like they are struggling to keep up. The one I have ordered is expected at YouShop between the 25th and 30th this month and that is with free super saver shipping so shipping date should be next week. Amazon are now saying shipping in 4 to 6 weeks for new orders.

We’ve listened to customer feedback
We’re excited that you’ve signed up to YouShop. We’ve received a lot of great feedback from customers and some of the feedback has been around how we calculate the international postage cost. As a result, we have decided to change how we calculate this.

The new YouShop international postage will be calculated as NZD$12.50 per parcel + NZD$4.75 per 500g, with a minimum chargeable weight of 500g and 500g increments thereafter.

How does the new pricing work?
The weight based portion of the international postage will be based on the greater of the actual weight or volumetric weight of the parcel. Using this method to calculate the weight of an item is common practice in the international shipping industry.

The volumetric weight of a parcel is based on how large the parcel is and is calculated by (Length (cm) x Height (cm) x Width (cm)) ÷ 5000

For example, a shoe box might have an actual weight of 800g but the volumetric weight would be:

(27cm x 22cm x10cm) ÷ 5000 = 1.2kg volumetric weight

The international postage cost in this case would be: NZD$12.50 + NZD$14.25 = NZD$26.75.

The old price (based on actual weight and the previous pricing of NZD$12.50 per parcel + NZD$21.00 per kg) would have been NZD$33.50. You would save NZD$6.75.

When will this new pricing take effect?
For existing YouShop users any parcel that is currently at our warehouse with international postage still to be paid or that arrives at our warehouse before 19 October 2012 will be priced based on the lowest price of either the old or the new pricing structure.

For any item that arrives at our warehouse after 19 October 2012 the international postage will be calculated according to the new rates.

Interesting this is getting such traction.

I thought much of the market would avoid it to try and get away without paying duty and GST, even if it meant taking your chances with final delivery. But NZ Post has made it easy for people, bring the credibility of a large NZ company, and I guess are almost 'legitimising' this type of importing.

It also demonstrates that people will pay GST and Duty, in exchange for a better quality service and implicit trust in the company doing the work.

That NZ Post are expanding to include Australia, Europe and the UK quick smart says to me the gamble was worth it. So good on them for doing this work and taking the risk - I can only imagine what the internal business case and project would have been like. Protracted and painful springs to mind.

I keep thinking of the Media industry making it so difficult for this part of the world to consume TV and Music. Steve Jobs was right in his hunch that if you make it easy for people to get music and don't make them feel like criminals they will lap it up in droves.

There will always be a subclass of society who want to feel they are winning by downloading pirated movies and games, and they will never go away. They will never buy no matter what... and they are the absolute minority so who gives a monkeys.

Imagine if the major content owners and distributors just made it easy for people to get the content... and most of them ponied up via their credit cards because it was easy... and why won't Apple make all their catalogue available in the NZ store, honestly!

Back to reality....

Note that the service is not officially launched yet. It seems they are still working on it, adjusting prices for a blitz before Christmas.

Well they better hurry since its getting close!!

I can imagine that many local retailers will not be happy if NZ post start with price comparisons. But if it forces the local sellers to get their prices in line its a double plus.

I'm not certain, but I believe that it's because they're leaned on by suppliers to only sell to US/CA.

Wouldn't surprise me TBH... so their suppliers can overinflate prices in other regions? :-/

I can give you a cast iron example of this.

Surefire make awesome torches - used by police and military and really tough/bright etc.

Try ordering one from a US supplier. Nope. You won't - they cannot ship outside the USA. I even had one try and kid me on that they were banned export items under the ITAR arrangements!!

And yet...the NZ supplier will happily sell you one of these 'banned' items legitimately.

However......the one my brother mailed me from California cost NZ$150 equivalent. Same model from the NZ importer? Was NZ$700 or so at the time!

NZ$ prices have come down a bit since then but are still WAY over the US prices.

When I first moved to NZ around 10 years ago, I found I could order just about anything from Amazon. Now, almost everything I want comes up with "We cannot ship this to your default shipping address".

But if NZ Post's $150 is in addition to those charges, it's about 10 times what I was charged by another agent.

I have to say that the import transaction fee - which is a relatively recent invention - is a rort.

I pay Customs to do their job via my annual tax bill. This is just a money grab.

I remember when I first arrived, Customs told me I needed to register as an importer and have a number in order to bring in any item worth more than $1000.

I tried to explain to them that I am not an importer but merely a citizen of the world who shops wherever it is most cost effective to shop but they could not understand the difference between that and someone who actually imports as a business.
