And there's so much interesting stuff on YT they could be watching instead: Woodworking videos, electronic device teardowns, engine rebuilds, armchair commentary on Ukrainian military tactics, rusty workshop equipment restoration... why would anyone watch boring murder documentaries instead?

That's uncanny, looks like your feed has been copied to mine.

And the answer is usually 'for the inheritance' so to avoid ending up in a chalk outline make sure you spend all your money ASAP.

My mobility scooter wont charge. I have b=not used it for a while and was unable to get into the garage to charge it. I am told that if the batteries in these things are allowed to go flat the the charger will not connect to the battery circuit and wont start the charge cycle. The remedy is apparently

to replace the batteries which will cost circa $1,000. It seems daft to me that a mobility device that is used by the elderly  and or disabled does not have protection built in to prevent deep discharge given the odds are quite high that they could be left for longer periods between charging due to circumstances. So I will

have to stump up wad of readies and wait until I can arrange install, *$%%#^& annoying.

That does sound like a pain. Are they just 12V lead-acid batteries? If so, it's probably worthwhile trying something like this ->

Buy the CTEK MXS 3.8 Advanced Battery Charger , 12V 1.2 - 85 AH (130Ah) 7... ( 56-988 ) online - PBTech.co.nz

I recommend those for keeping the battery in the Nissan Leaf alive, and they're pretty great. Unless the batteries are totally kaput, that can probably bring them back.

Also talk to an automotive battery specialist.  The Battery Shop down in Petone has been able to revive a dead flat car battery for me when the CTek wouldn't touch it.  Otherwise someone like Battery Bill apparently has a mobile service.  They might be able to come and have a look to see if there's a chance on reviving it.

@MikeB4 sometimes, when a smart charger won't touch a battery, a dumb charger can be used to give it a "jump start" before using a smart charger to recondition them.

Happy to have a look before you have to open your wallet, if you want.

As above, smart chargers are great but sometimes they are too smart! I've had success in the past by just connecting a second battery as if I was going to jump start a car. Leave it for 15mins then connect the smart charger up to the dead battery. This way there is normally just enough juice in the dead battery to allow the smart charger to start charging.

AT (Auckland Transport).

I just started using a Monthly Pass on my HOP card.

I thought (mistakenly) that you had to load your HOP card with enough money to buy the Monthly Pass ($345 in my case).

So I did. Then I went to purchase the Monthly Pass. Nope, you can only use a credit card to do that. No choice but to use my credit card. Now I've paid out $690.

All good, I'll call AT and they'll refund it.

Nope.

'Can't refund HOP money once it is loaded onto a HOP card' I'll never use $345, and if I can't use it to buy a monthly pass, I've wasted it (or lent it to AT for the next 4 or so years - I reckon I might use about $80 a year on HOP).

To 'fix' this, I have to lose or cancel my HOP card, fill in a form surrendering it and they will process a refund within 14 days. I get this information 15 days after I first enquired about it (it took them that long to come back to me to tell me this is what I have to do - WHY oh WHY couldn't they have told me that when I called them 15 days ago?!?!)

If I cancel my HOP card, they say I can transfer my monthly pass to another (which still has two weeks to run), but they don't say if that happens instantly (the wording is You can request to transfer the monthly pass to the other HOP card under the same account, when you cancel the HOP card') which gives me no confidence this will happen before I next need to use that monthly pass.

How can such a big entity be sooo useless at the basic things. I made a mistake, yes (but I did read up beforehand and nowhere did I see I couldn't use HOP money to buy a monthly pass), surely they can just cancel my last payment and return it to me? Nope.

As I see it, my only solution to guarantee travel is to purchase another HOP card, wait till my current monthly pass expires, buy a new monthly pass on the new HOP card then surrender my current HOP card for a refund (and wait 14 days + AT muck around time for that). 6 weeks they will have had my money by then.

If all else fails and the batteries are unrecoverable, and assuming they're SLA rather than some exotic LiIon pack, you should be able to replace them for a lot less than $1k. Even the most expensive type, the 18Ah ones, are around the $100 mark, so $200 for a pack of two.

Can you post a photo of the setup and/or the make/model of the scooter?

Their whole system is terrible. I'm looking forward to change when (if) the unified ticketing project is completed.

I am out of my skill set here. I can/could repair motor vehicles. Build Networks and PCs but these battery things are beyond me. The specified batteries are as linked below. The mobility scooter has two of them at $499 incl GST each

Another thing they used to do with depressing regularity is record a tag on + tag off as two tag ons and then charge two penalty fares for not tagging off. Then you'd have to go in and fill out a form for a refund on each of the bogus fares, with, as an added bonus, a field limited to about twenty characters to explain why you wanted a refund (see the other Annoy post about these fields). They must have been buried under these because at some point I stopped filling in the field and still got the refund so they obviously never checked them.

Reminds me of Apple. We asked to have Activation Lock removed from an iPhone, forgot to attach proof of purchase, and they unlocked it anyway.

This annoys me:
https://i.stuff.co.nz/business/money/129959920/your-dignity-disappears-says-single-mum-stranded-when-lender-immobilised-her-car

On a couple of levels.

1: predatory lending and bad practices
2: people openly admitting that they’ve borrowed money they can’t really afford without reading the contract

As a former lender, I get annoyed with both.
