Eva888: That it’s only weeks till Christmas and my kitchen flooding had obviously travelled further than first thought so more needs to be cut out to see and State insurance who we never claim anything for, call it slow damage so they aren’t liable. The place just looks a mess with everything out of cupboards. Outside there’s mud and dirt everywhere from the bank and of course it rained yesterday.

In consolation I remind myself this could be worse. Also thinking about changing insurance companies. I simply don’t have the energy to argue about it with them.

I have to say, with the claims process and almost instant acceptance and acceptance of an increase to the claim, we have been pretty impressed with IAG under Westpac's white-labelled insurance.

Our flooding caused damage to the Kitchen, Dining, Lounge and 2 Bedrooms. It was from overflowing (back-flowing) gutters and they have accepted it all. The only problem is, they don't start work for another 2 weeks and we made the claim in April.

I live in Whakatane and recently did an online order for something. The site, like many, had address autocompletion. It auto-completed my town as "Whakatane" with a macron over the second A.

Having now received the package, the label reads "Whakat ne". What is the point of autofilling a macron if your system can't handle it?

@Handsomedan you were very lucky then. We aren’t with Westpac but wonder now if getting insurance via any bank would be better even though the same companies are involved maybe they are more lenient? You did well and very glad for you.

The problem was that I hadn’t noticed the flooding as it was contained beneath the cupboards in an airspace and assessor saw mould and said that takes weeks to form whatever that means in insurance terms. Will definitely look at IAG after Xmas as couldn’t face the hassle right now.

We had an issue a number of years ago where a leaking dishwasher slowly turned particle board flooring to "Weetbix", but we didn't notice it until it finally leaked out from under the cupboards to under the vinyl in the kitchen and we detected spongy flooring - probably many months later. Insurance company initially declined the claim, but after we complained, they made an ex-gratia payment towards the cost. Dishwasher and flooring was well over 10 years old.

Worth asking if you have been a long-standing customer with few claims.

Reminds me of a comment some years ago from a visiting-from-overseas builder who asked "why are houses built from Weetabix in New Zealand"? He was less than impressed by balloon framing, uninsulated walls, etc.

It looks like time for the annual AML BS. TSB complained that they had a letter returned that they sent to my residential, which is unsurprising given there is no residential mail delivery in the UAE. They have been told this but of course couldn’t possibly email the correspondence.

Now they have advised they will call me which will be another screw up. They generally call at 3am which of course will go unanswered. I have to explain every time that we aren’t NZ residents, we don’t have a residential mailing address and yes we will send a fair chunk of funds to NZ a few times a year, just like we have for the last 4 years. It’s like dealing with the Clamperts.

Many newer TP-Link APs which can only be configured and used by downloading an app, making it impossible to diagnose anything but the most elementary networking problems. Helped set one up today for some 80-ish folks and it never worked, one guess was that it was MAC address locking by the ISP (the more obvious case would have been a static IP rather than DHCP but that sounds unlikely for their plan). The only way to resolve it was to use their crappy original router as a go-between from the ONT to the AP.

Retailer's website says it's open until midnight. Turned up at 19:10 and found it shut.

So insurance will pay $1500 for residual damage, however I need to check if it’s worth losing a no claims bonus and how much the premium will go up by next year if I accept.

Meanwhile...in my sodden kitchen of woe the locusts didn’t arrive but the oven just blew in perfect timing after heating to 160 to put moussaka in it for dinner. The room filled with a white haze that stuck to the inside of the oven like chalk. Hope it wasn’t asbestos in the broken element that was burning.

Wondering how many more hexes will fit into a week.

You still have to disclose the damage and they will jack the premiums up regardless. Just like if you have a car accident and dont bother to put the claim thru.
