msukiwi:
The sheer number of vehicles (Even with trailers) which blast through the Stop Sign at our corner!
The CCC Traffic Engineer said "oh, maybe it should be a Give Way!"
To which I replied "At a Blind T Intersection?"
He replied "Oh, it needs to be a STOP!"
If it WAS policed, over $200k per month in fines! YES it is that bad!
I've only witnessed one T-Boned motorcyclist so far!
The Police aren't interested!
(Been told by other that it is like that "everywhere" if you look!)
As I've said before, Auckland Council could easily pay down their debt if they installed red light cameras at every intersection. It would prevent a few deaths and serious injuries too, but that is probably less motivating for politicians than money.

I expect they might start to see the response that the UK has to their new cameras being installed.
Excessively inefficient use of intersections when not busy with absurd light sequencing and delays makes the intersection empty for so long with cars waiting. No wonder people will take the orange/red when they're up for another 3-4 min wait while the intersection is empty.
All the stupid right turn red arrows that block people from going for no reason. Sure, light them when the crossing is in use but if its not, then there is no reason for it and a normal green and letting cars go when there is a gap is better.

Some of you will know, we lived in Sydney, Melbourne, Sydney for 30 years. Traffic point to point speed cameras on MW's & FW's, plain old speed cameras AND red light camera's are all over the place. And after watching some East Coast cop shows since returning to NZ, they now have low down through the wind-shield & side window based camera's for phone use.
From 1st March 2020 drivers caught by a mobile phone detection camera will be fined and lose 5 demerit points. The aim of Transport NSW is to have 45 mobile detection cameras by 2022-2023 capable of screening 135 million vehicles each year for illegal mobile phone use. https://astorlegal.com.au/locations-of-new-mobile-phone-detection-cameras/
NSW is $362, or $481 if detected in a school zone for phone use(as of October 2023)
I do not know how much all these speed and phone camera's have slowed traffic or prevented accidents etc.
But the point is - IT DOES - Government, police and councils need to stop listening to the minority privacy advocates and other so called do gooders and spend the money and put all these in place. In the long run, it will save medical, insurance and all sorts of other expenses for the country as a whole.
Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Americans have been stopping and turning on red since the days of Henry Ford. It seems to work well enough there.

It depends on the state and which side of the road.
In the USA right on red is usually ok, but left on red follows strict rules depending if from one-way and two-way streets into one-way streets or from one-way streets into one-way streets. Some states prohibit left on red altogether.
So don't go turning in the USA without knowing the rules.

I would add 'Blind Corner Passing/lane-Departure Cameras'.
There is also that stretch near Maramarua where accidents abound, end of passing lane , Aliens?
There is something common happening at particular spots that have regular accidents.
Probably a 100x near misses get missed, so behavior continues.
frankv: Or just some incompetent disguise-cut'n'paste by the "reporter". I can imagine how "An email receipt for checked bags on Alaska Airlines flight 1282 was on the phone" could become "...on the screen".
The YT thumbnail in this thread shows the phone with the email on the screen. What is curious is that the passenger name Cuong Tran is shown and apart from some speculation that the passenger could be Vietnamese there doesn't seem to be any follow up on that.
RNZ reporting some tourists on bike in Tongariro crossing today. Onenews reported is about 3 weeks ago.

We have been lucky to have driven over 25000 miles in North America over the last 10 years and I can honestly say I prefer driving there. Obviously everything is bigger with many more highway lanes, pullover turning lanes and higher speeds but the one that really impresses me is the right turn on red. It just works. (Not sure if it would work here on left but I would love it if we could.)
