We have a representative democracy in New Zealand.

If you for a second think that day to day dealings in this democracy is not influenced by interest groups, then you need to wake up right now.

That said, the process of electing a flag, while not 100% pure democratic (since a selected group picked the 4, and then an interest group picked a 5th), will be democratic in its process to figure out if New Zealanders want to change the flag or not, because everyone will get to vote on it.

The flag change is being put to the people by a referendum. That referendum is now skewed because Redpeak is now part of it.

This is not about the day to day dealings of democracy. Its about those choices in the referendum put to us, and how redpeak has been bulldozed in by the greens. Why are the other more popular flags not part of the referendum? That is my gripe with this process.

Would we be living in a democracy if we could vote for prime minister, but it was a choice of only 4? Then at the last minute Chris Brown was added as number 5 (due to pressure from a minority).
Same thing really.

Well leaving aside the fact that we don't vote for a PM but MPs and/or a party, that's pretty much what does happen. The parties (special interest groups) decide who is leader and therefore who is PM.

How is having additional choices offered at a late stage in any way a restriction or a subversion of Democracy?

As there has been no referendum yet how can the referendum be skewed?
