Vodafone Red Alert TXT Donate
Following on from Saturday’s devastating earthquake in Canterbury, Vodafone is partnering with The New Zealand Red Cross to provide essential support for those who need it most at this critical time.
Vodafone customers can donate either $3 or $5 to the cause by TXTing ‘Quake’ to either 333 ($3 donation) or 555 ($5 donation). 100% of all donations will go to the Canterbury Earthquake Appeal. This appeal will help people whose homes, livelihoods and wellbeing have been affected by the earthquake near Christchurch. Progress on their work can be found at: www.redcross.org.nz
Vodafone New Zealand Chief Executive Russell Stanners says, “The days following a disaster are the most critical, it’s important to have the best people on the ground there assessing and assisting in the disaster recovery, which is why we have partnered with the Red Cross. They are the experts in this field, and Vodafone is more than happy to provide the technology to allow New Zealander’s the opportunity to donate to the disaster relief fund. A lot of our staff come from Canterbury and still have family there plus we have over 40 of our team based in Christchurch.”
Vodafone has kicked off donations with $250,000, Vodafone Fiji has pledged F$10,000 and Vodafone Foundation Australia has donated AU$10,000.
The Vodafone Network Operations Team has been working around the clock since Saturday morning ensuring the lines of communication have remained open in Canterbury; power was lost to 98 of the 130 sites in the area. Extra staff and power generation equipment was flown in over the weekend, this along with the co-operation of Canterbury locals who assisted by using their mobile for TXT only (voice in an emergency) ensured there were no major disruptions to the network.
