Geektastic: NZ Post.

For the first time ever they left a card in my post box saying they couldn’t deliver something because it needed a signature - despite such deliveries being something they have done a dozen times this year already.

Now I have to do a 40km round trip tomorrow to pick it up.

And I was actually in the house if they’d bothered to drive down and find out.

I've complained about this issue in the past where driver has been too lazy to check if someone is home or "self-signs" a package for an apartment building. In all cases, i've gotten a case manager, in 2 circumstances they've referred it to Pace and given it to me as a priority delivery. It is a hassle to call them up about it though.

Read the beauty myth by naomi wolf and we can get back to bitching about courier deliveries.

A good proportion of the courier drivers in our area are women but I have not seen many of them wearing high heels.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Rikkitic:

I think you are a bit blinkered in your thinking. You seem to believe there is no such thing as unspoken rules or expectations. I can't speak for Hayley Holt and wouldn't if I could, but I very much doubt many women wear heels by choice. For one thing, they are uncomfortable. Here is one article on the subject.

Since most of the people commenting on this seem to be male, flip it the other way round. Does anyone really leap out of bed in the morning and put on a long-sleeved shirt with a starched collar that, if you're unlucky enough, you have to change every day due to sweat stains/grubby collar, tie a ridiculous dishcloth around their neck that hangs down their front and gets in the way of everything they do, and then top it off with a stuffy jacket when it's 28 degrees in the shade, because they like it?

You can see what most wearers of this getup think of it by how they handle it, the jacket goes across the back of a chair at the first opportunity and the dishcloth gets loosened if they think they can get away with it (you can't take it off though, what would people think if you took off your dishcloth?).

The minute they get home the jacket, dishcloth, and shirt are gone. And yes, this is off topic and annoying because the forum is... well, look up at the title.

So you're saying they read the book?

I think that for some it's a badge of office, a symbol of power & prestige. So many wear that stuff willingly and perhaps even preferentially. If it's 28 in the shade, you can show off your wealth by wearing a lightweight mohair suit that won't get you overheated. Or you can go from your aircon home to your aircon car to your aircon office.

I guess you could argue that, like women who like high heels, those men are brainwashed into liking something that's bad for them. But I think that liking bad things is actually part of being human. And it's a bid condescending to tell people what they should or should not like.

I'd agree with that - we don't have a strict dresscode. We are "smart casual" most of the time - many wear nice jeans or chinos and a decent top of some description.

There are always those that insist on wearing a suit and tie. They "power dress" for the people. Or for themselves.

The absurd amount of spam email I've been getting over the past month or so. I find it astounding that spam's been a problem for 25+ years, yet fixing the problem (e.g. validating who the sender is) has been in the providers' too-hard basket for just as long.

I got virtually none over the Christmas/New Year period (even automated spam needs a holiday?), but yeah for the last couple of weeks my Junk Mail folder has been crowded - 14 so far today

We've had validation for years with things like DKIM and SPF, which as predicted by security people well in advance of it being adopted do essentially nothing to stop spam - why would knowing that the email definitely came from Bob's compromised account have any effect on spam rates?

If I may flip that question around, how would you block spam if you don't know where it's coming from?

The way it's currently being done, combination of blacklisting, greylisting, keyword/phrase filtering, sending mailer fingerprinting, behavioural checking, ...

Which clearly doesn't work, or we wouldn't be having this conversation in the first place.

(That might come across a little rude, but rest assured that my annoyance is with the spammers, not with you.)

Yup. If you have a solution, please let the world know. In the meantime, here's a preemptive response.
