DarthKermit: I saw the new Hobbit movie last week. I had a similar reaction to some people above: Jackson changing the basic elements of the story wherever he liked.

I did think that Smaug was very well done (probably the best CGI creature creation to date), even if they once again ripped shreds out of how the story in the book played out.

I saw TDoS in 2D, as I always get eyestrain from 3D movies and don't intend to see any in that format again.

Totally agree. We now avoid 3D for the same reasons.

Saw it in the cinema in Martinborough which has only 30 or so seats, all big comfy business class type! They brought our garlic bread and drinks to us in the cinema...!

I do wish Jackson would leave well alone. A little artistic licence is one thing, but creating new characters etc is a step too far.

You would be hard pressed to find movies etc that have not created additional characters, quite often needed to make the successful transfer from written to moving stories

That may (sometimes) be true.

In this case, not so much. The story could easily have been told minus Tauriel and remained more accurate.

Grabbed 'RED 2' on BR.

8/10 from me. Just as good as the first, best comedy/action flick for ages. Just ignore the gaping plot holes, stick the brain in neutral and enjoy the ride. Laughed my head off, and it even got the other half's approval.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Started watching The Heat and was bored 30 minutes in. I felt like I was watching a badly rehashed version of Beverly Hills Cop that didn't make me even grin slightly. :( 3/10.

But not nearly as entertaining. I love Tolkien and was enough of a nerd that I studied Quenya for a while in the early 2000's.  Unfortunately I would have to say that as wonderful as he was at creating a rich, wonderful and very believable world, he was quite mediocre at storytelling from an entertainment aspect and would not be very engaging to a wide audience without the 'gratuitous' fluff that Peter Jackson added to make the story more universally appealing.

RED 2: Fun - silly and quite a few laughs. Worth watching.

2 GUNS: Also fun - a few little twists and turns, a few laughs and decent amount of action. Worth watching.

Frozen 9/10

The family really enjoyed this. Princess and Prince theme done extremely well by Disney. I even almost shed a tear at one stage.

Open Grave - what a mess. I still have no idea what the purpose of the story was, who anyone was, or why what happened happened. Shambles, incoherent, pointless.

Captain Phillips. I really liked it, my husband got bored. It's one of those movies that makes you want to find out more information afterwards. I found the very last scenes very affecting. Tom Hanks did a terrific job throughout and was very believable.

The Book Thief. Not a bad adaptation of the book. I liked the house set.

I'm going to see Walter Mitty next mostly based on positive comments here. Looking forward to Ender's Game.

red 2 - total crap, not a single redeeming feature, even the bd transfer was less than pristine.

machete kills - if there is a next one, re-title it machete dies as this franchise has run out of steam.

rush - surprisingly good ! opie's (and peter morgan's) best film yet, makes up for the trioe that was frost/nixon.

My RoboCop DVD. Can't beat that 1987 ultra-violent original. The remake is gonna be an American PG-13 rating. Part of the satire of RC was the over the top violence. Will have to see if the remake is anything good.

Now you see me - It's got some pretty bad reviews, but I really liked it. Maybe it's because it's got that hot ginger Isla Fisher in it...

Loopers (2012) - Time travel. Mafia hitmen are out to get each other and themselves. With Bruce Willis. Nice balance of action and suspense. 7/10.

Elysium (2013) - Future L.A becomes a wealth based South African style dystopia. Vin Diesel Matt Damon tries to break out and get advanced medical treatment for a terminally ill child. 7/10.

Watched a couple of movies on holiday:

Walking With Dinosaurs 3D - went to the cinemas with the kids to watch this.
CGI is truly impressive. Wouldn't work in 2D, I don't think.
Sadly spoilt by the silly story, that is trying too hard to be endearing.
They should've stuck with the way that the arena show was done.
For visuals, I'd give this a 10/10. Overall - 6/10

RIPD - essentially Men In Black, but with dead folk instead of aliens.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope it turns into a franchise.
Funny, nonsensical, good action sequences and silly characters. 8/10

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2: 1/10 move along folks, nothing to see here.

Hitchcock: 7/10 very interesting and enjoyed watching this one.

Real Steel: 8/10 very nice movie, yes predictable and typical action movie but it was fun to watch.

Watched Stuck in Love on Netflix. Not bad for a quiet evening at home, if you like romance/comedy stuff. Probably a good 6.5/10 there.

Saw Philomena last night. Quite enjoyed it, funny and sad. Judi Dench is a great actress and Coogan does a good job too.

7.5/10, will watch again one day (probably when it is on TV).
