neb: No, but I'm pretty sure there was carpet covering the bare particle board flooring when we viewed the place originally.

When I lived in Switzerland for a few months, it was normal for people to remove everything when they left... carpets, light fittings, curtains. OTOH, fridge and stove were included in our rented apartment. But there were wires hanging out the holes in the ceilings with bare ends. We managed to retrieve the carpets from the skip bin outside, but had to splash out SFR100 for net curtains for the lounge.

Yeah, removing curtains and carpets isn't uncommon in Europe (that is, it's accepted practice, not near-vandalism like it'd be here), but I haven't heard of removing light fittings.

Here in the UAE you don’t get curtains or appliances when you rent or buy. Carpets aren’t an issue as no houses have them.

Small business owners in particular can be quite irritating.

Ran into quite possibly the rudest person I've ever met a few weeks back while helping my neighbour sort out his mobility scooter at Auckland Mobility Warehouse (and I'll name the place because the service was so shocking). Right from the start, when he sat there typing away on his computer for some time completely ignoring the customers standing there waiting, including the one have trouble standing, through to calling his customers idiots, asked things like "didn't you hear what I just told you?" when one of them wanted to confirm something and in general just being rude and abusive towards them, said he wasn't taking the batteries they'd just spent hundreds of dollars on back if there was a problem, my neighbour commented afterwards that "there's someone who's lost interest in running his business".

Mr W Kerr I presume?

I came across removal of light fittings in Germany.

I presume then there's some bureaucratic process for getting them reinstalled with an appropriately long word to match.

The word is quite short, but the tradition of drinking Rhabarberbarbarabarbarbarenbartbarbierbier afterwards needs some work.

When we purchased our current house, the vendors wrote into the agreement that they wanted to take their light fittings from the lounge and dining room. As it transpired, the originals were stored in a cupboard there and we liked them much better anyway.

Not just the things you mentioned either - some friends of ours went to live in SW Germany for three years and returned to NZ just as COVID was starting. They told us that it is totally usual and accepted practice there to take the entire contents of the kitchen (cabinetry etc) and to leave the property bare of those things - regardless of whether the property is being sold or is rented.

Sometimes you might be be able to negotiate with the outgoing tenant or owner/vendor for them to leave the stuff and for you to buy it from them - but that’s not the norm. Kitchen fittings are regarded as chattels rather than fixtures. Weird but true.

Has RNZ completely abandoned basic proofreading? This article is riddled with typos. It is one of the worst examples I have seen.

Wow, you'd really want to know about that in advance! Most kitchen cabinetry is pretty custom as every kitchen would be different etc and how you'd want it laid out could differ. Or are houses bulk standard in that regard in most houses in Europe?

People do know in advance because it’s the default situation. Not removing the kitchen is the exception. We have spent some time in Germany - not a lot - but I definitely get the impression that houses are not at all bulk standard.

All very strange and joiners’ and cabinetmakers’ heaven.

Their grandiose plans for a mediocre stadium in a rubbish location that they can’t afford.

Eden Park shouldn’t exist anymore but Auckland couldn’t get out of its own way.
