What has happened to RNZ? Have they replaced their headline writers with monkeys? There are so many of these really  stupid, basic, anyone-in-primary-school-would-notice-it types of errors recently. Whoever writes the headlines doesn't bother to read the articles, or doesn't understand them. It is really off-putting.

Anyway, here is the latest dumb, dumb, dumb example: "Nearly half of world population could go below poverty line - report"

That is the headline. Click on the link and the article starts: "The Covid-19 crisis could see the number of people in extreme poverty rise to 1.1 billion worldwide under the worst-case scenario, researchers say."

I don't know how old the monkey who wrote this is, but the world population has not been anywhere near two billion since flappers were dancing the Charleston. "Nearly half" of it would be a lot closer to four billion.

It greatly disappoints me to see RNZ constantly making these stupid kinds of sloppy ignorant mistakes. Anyone with even a minimal education would immediately spot this one. They badly need to up their game if they are to have any credibility as a serious news source. Either bring back real editors or hire real journalists.

You are right but I still find it unclear. The distinction made in the article is not made in the headline. The headline on the article itself (as opposed to the RNZ page) is much better.

This dumb photoshopped image in a NZ Herald story about a ransomware attack on the Lion brewery:

They started with the standard photo they use for any article to do with malware, or Teh Dark Webs, or shady goings-on on the intarweb: a hooded fellow in front of a laptop, bathed in sinister blue lighting. Only this time they had to tie it in more with the story. So they did a laughably amateur cut and paste job of plonking down a picture of a can of Lion Red. Then they did a laughably amateur job of photoshopping the can to look like it matched the lighting in the rest of the image. And failed.

My God, Stuff's new homepage looks bloody terrible. At least the old one - while not perfect - was reasonably compact. Now it feels like you have to scroll for hours to see anything as the top headlines take up almost the entire top of the page.

Fortunately the app hasn't changed - yet.
