This is discussed at length somewhere else on Geekzone. Customs calculates GST on everything coming into the country (incl. shipping costs). You are only asked to pay when the charge is over $60. Effectively you don't have to pay anything if your goods + shipping costs are below $400.

Also note that when you qualify to pay $60 you also qualify automatically for a one time flat fee processing fee of $30 something dollars.

The amount you can get away with varies a lot based on the type of product. Can't get anywhere near $400 of clothing for example since they incur a higher duty.

But as you said, www.whatsmyduty.org.nz works it all out for you.

The IETF (Import entry transaction fee) is now $46.89. So as soon as you pass the $60 threshold you will have to pay at least $106.89.

Looks like anything that is an add in item removes the free global super saver option :(

Which if you ask me is patent bollocks, and ample reason why the retailers association can go jump on their "charge GST/duty on everything imported!" campaign.  It's also patently offensive to me that the government claims that "collecting anything less than $60 in taxes on an import is uneconomical" and yet apparently even $60 is uneconomical, because they slap a ~75% additional charge on top of it.  If that's the way it is, then the limit should be raised to $100, and that stupid IETF done away with.

Huh?

IETF is a processing fee to cover the processing costs and protecting the NZ border with a biosecurity levy, along with a chunk that goes towards the new JBMS system.

I think it's only fair that if your goods have to be manually processed by Customs that you have to pay a handling fee for this.

I never saw that filter workingcorrectly all the time... Like the Amazon Instant Video New Releases list. The first page is ok, but the second page starts listing ten years old movies and so on. I don't trust Amazon developers 100%.

my amazon account is fubared ?

logged in to check some stuff (music cd's, movie blu-rays) and at checkout i'm missing the standard shipping option.

all items were sold by amazon and available to nz so were eligible for standard shipping.

instead the only shipping available is expedited.

I saw that on some of the last few packages I had delivered.  They still arrived on time so it didn't bother me.

via GP post/thread

New Zealand is no longer eligible for free shipping via Amazon global saver program. Paid shipping only. Mexico and Singapore still get free shipping.

Great value while it lasted
