We take bets (not for money) as to how big they are. And don't you find it odd that we call them after shocks when they're earthquakes. Not enjoying them one little bit. That was the 14th since midnight.

Few questions:

Newspaper said about 500 homes have to be demolished. Anyone know how much unused houses there are to rent to Christchurch?

If a crack in a road is 3 metres wide and 1 metre deep how long would it take to fill the crack? Could the engineers just put 15 minute concrete in there?

Is the state of emergency 7pm-7am curfew still in place and if it is does it only apply to streets in the police cordon? So if there are bars and nightclubs in the cbd outside the police cordon can people go there anytime or are the police kicking everyone out of the cbd at 7pm?

The Hub Hornby is currently open but operating limited stores. All supermarkets except those in closed malls are open.

We're having another rush on all our stores today, worse than saturdays.

On a positive note the plumber finally turned up, 2 minutes and some nut tightening later and we had a fixed hot water tank and $130 bill. Great time to be a plumber!

That is terrible for a plumber to charge that sort of money for a simple repair. It is almost as though they are taking advatage of the situation. I had a plumber in last year to fix a waterpipe joint that had burst, and they only charged $40 including parts for a 20 minute job.
I don't agree with people making profit like that out of natural disasters. There should be some form of regulation to prevent that sort of thing, otherwise people will just price gouge, due to the high needs.

1. From what I read (and understood), Housing NZ are using private rental property too
2. Unsure
3. From my undesrstanding the curfew is only for the cordoned off areas e.g. the CBD. It's really to assist the Policy/Army/other officials to keep people from entering the CBD where there's high risk of further injury.

There will still be an extremely limited stock of private rental properties relative to the number of people who have been displaced. The medium term housing situation is going to be a huge problem, and will probably force a lot of people out of the city.

There appear to be a number of good initiatives coming out of the telcos including Vodafone setting up a text message based donation service for the Red Cross, 2 Degrees offering free access to Civil Defence related web sites, and Telecom offering free payphone and Wifi hotspot usage around the region. Furthermore, their infrastructure appears to have held up well and customers have been kept well informed. However, as far as I have seen, today's announcement of a $250,000 donation from Vodafone is the first time we have seen any of the telcos actually get out their chequebooks in support of this disaster.

Although I'm no fan of Vodafone I think that this move should be commended and certainly gives me a good reason to think twice about shifting my business away from them. Have any other the other big telcos made significant cash donations that I have missed? If not, do any representatives want to comment here?

I was in Kaiapoi yesterday shifting silt where I saw a street lamp that had sunk into the ground up to the street sign. Crazy thing was that it was still on.

If this sized EQ happened in the Lower part of the Hutt Valley and some reclaimed parts of Wellington, it would also very likely suffer the same form of liquefaction. It is scary stuff to see in real life.
