Have a look in most towns and cities and you will see the flashest buildings are the council offices. It seems a bit out of place to me that the councils can afford better offices than their ratepayers.

It's not just council offices, it's anything council-built. From a friend who lives there (so information is second-hand, E&OE), this is the new cultural centre in one of Auckland's very-much-lower-income suburbs:

For context, this is what's across the road:

This is its utilisation for the month of February.

Life in Florida. (I realize it's a year-old, but I discovered it today)

Florida man, son chase after 'burglar' who was returning mis delivered package: sheriff

FOX 13 Tampa Bay

Florida Sherriff: "Good Monday everyone I told you last week that we would join together for more information whenever someone else did something really really stupid and they did it was over the weekend.

I want to introduce you to ___ who's 73 and his son who's 15. Now what I'm about to tell you you just absolutely
cannot believe this ranks among the craziest stuff that I've seen in a while and I've seen a lot of crazy stuff ..."

THere was once a time when this would have surprised me and appeared to be "crazy".  But now this sort of thing is what Americans call "Tuesday".

They go on about "mah right to bear arms" (quite missing the pertinent part of the amendment) and how they need "more good guys with guns to combat the bad guys with guns" and completely fail to see that this is the result.

I think the Earth itself will breath a sigh of relief when this current infestation of humans eliminates itself.

I don’t quite get this Florida video. The sheriff was talking on a Monday and said the incident happened over the prior weekend. So this was before any trial but he’s effectively saying that these guys are guilty. It might have been obvious what had happened and who was involved - but what happened to ‘innocent until proven guilty’? The sheriff could be skating on thin ice - in NZ every second word would be ‘alleged’.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

So because it's in GI it should be dump?

Incidentally it cost around $5000 a square meter to build, roughly a third of what Commercial Bay cost per square meter.

Sidenote: I worked briefly for an American sheriff in Alabama in a side business he ran. I remember him telling a story about how multiple Sherriff cars had chased down someone. After crashing, the sole convict threw a punch at one of them. He casually discussed how six of them beat him up, and kicked him on the ground till he was unconscious. They took him directly to jail. He never mentioned medical help for him, so I can safely assume he was thrown into a car unconscious.

Sheriffs in Florida, Texas, Arizona, any southeastern state, and California are known to be low-quality, prone to corruption, and violent.

American sheriffs are elected, not hired. State laws dictate how much education they need, and are notoriously low. They want to appeal to voters, and professionalism is a low priority.

I could give a long list of bad sheriffs, but one I dislike most is Joe Arpaio

My brief research is that after a year the oldest is likely sitting in jail awaiting trail. I'd expect a 10 year minimum sentence, minus time served in prison.

No word on what happened to the 15 year old. I suspect he sitting in a juvenile facility, also awaiting trail. I suspect he'd a suspended sentence, given his age, he was with his caretaker when crime occurred, and lack of previous history.

It's not unusual for defending attorney of Florida juveniles to offer leaving the state for a suspended sentence. (Don't ask me how I know. I just do.) From Florida prosecutors' perspective, having a potential troublemaker leave the state means any future crimes becomes another state's problem.

This started with an Amazon Ring. People of colour with guns. Luckily no-one killed. Instead of "tragic misunderstanding we can all learn from" it's the book:

ClickOrlando:

Gino Colonacosta faces the following charges:
- Attempted felony murder
- Contributing to the delinquency or dependency of a child
- Possession of firearms by minor under 18 prohibited
- Attempts, solicitation, and conspiracy
- Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
- Culpable negligence
- Discharging firearm in public or on residential property
- Improper exhibition of dangerous weapons or firearms

Attempted felony murder is serious. I assume they don't have much of a lawyer either.

Himself went to the local fish and chip shop to get dinner tonight.

They added an extra 80c charge for paying by eftpos. 😠

Himself wasnt having any of that and paid cash after voicing his displeasure at the charge.

Might explain why the fish and chips was not up to its usual standard tonight.

But is this a common thing now? Surcharge for eftpos?

Not common at all. AFAIK there shouldn't be a surcharge on EFTpos, sometimes there is for Pay Wave or Credit.

Was there one of the Dodgy Bros standing in who wanted cash so he could skim the till?

That's unusual. Extra for a paywave debit card? Terminal setup error?

Sunday surcharge? I've seen that one in a few places for a while now. I think I've become blind to it. Edit: Maybe that one is only public holidays.

What button did you press? PayWave or credit card button surcharge yes. Never seen it for SAV or CHQ button though.

Usually some where around 1.7 percent, so approx 17 cents for every $10.

Had one place that charges for payWave. A line of people behind me, they charge a surcharge payWave so I did it long way, insert card, select Sav, type in pin and then remove card. Then wait for transaction approval. They  seemed a little unhappy but when they charge a surcharge I’ll play the game. Cash with change needed is another way.

Horror-tragic. But it also shows how seriously different it is WHERE in the world and under what conditions people handle weapons.

In order to be allowed to do this as a hunter, for example, I had to undergo comprehensive, costly and time-consuming hunting and firearms law training here (despite former military weapons training and police background check) and pass state examinations, of which 25% of the people failed from the outset. There are also strict handling regulations that make it illegal to carry weapons or handle ammunition outside of a hunting context, for example. Weapons must be stored in gun safes to which no one who is not a hunter (including my own family) has access. Even a live cartridge carelessly left behind in my off-road vehicle can lead to the withdrawal of all licences.
