Just watched Pain and Gain.

I thought it was pretty average tbh.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.   Glad I didn't waste $50 to go and see this in the theater.  Graphics and sound effects great but I found the story rather boring.
The rented this via QuickFlix and will be my last until they se the light and  go HD.   Will stick with iTunes.

ilovemusic: star wars bd - presentation, very good picture, excellent sound 8/10

film 4/10 after all these years the changes luca$ made still suck and suck even more in high definition.

maybe after gorge has gone someone with balls will take out all the special edition sh it and present star wars as it was originally seen.

couple of weeks ago I was watching this an gave up halfway through because I couldn't stomach all the cgi Lucas had added.
Sourced an original cinema release DVD and watched that instead - much much more enjoyable.

I can highly recommend the "despecialized" version of the original trilogy. HD video with all the original effects, transitions and wipes etc. Very good indeed!

Cheers,
Joseph

This very thing has been done, search for the "despecialized" versions of the original trilogy.
HD and remastered but the original cinema release.

Cheers,
Joseph

Is that a FanEdit or something official?

I do enjoy the prequel fan edits.  Less JarJar is always good.

Amazing Spiderman 2 (3D) - 8/10

I really enjoyed this film.  I was pretty skeptical about the first one, arguing as many did that we didn't need a reboot so soon after the Tobey Maguire/Sam Raimi version.  And while Amazing Spiderman 1 was okay, it was pretty forgettable.  I went into the theatre on Thursday struggling to remember the plot of the first one, but thankfully it doesn't affect this film.

Andrew Garfield as Spidey is growing on me - and he gives a different take on the character from Tobey Maguire.  I think Garfield is a little more believable as the wisecracking webslinger, whilst still managing to get across a little of the intelligence that Spiderman is supposed to have.  Emma Stone as Gwen does a good job too, and there is definitely some chemistry between them.  The banter feels natural, not forced, and the moments of lightness and humour are well placed.  Overall, the films strikes a good balance of humour vs action vs drama.  The action scenes are very good, and showcase the acrobatics nicely.  3D is still a bit gimicky here, but isn't too distracting.

The only issues I had were with the pacing - it felt a little long and drawn out in places, and the villains' screentime is unbalanced.  Also, the film's denouement is resolved too quickly. and felt like the producers didn't want to end on a sour (or at least low) note.  I think I would have ended the film about 5 minutes earlier, and maybe played for an Empire Strikes Back-style lead in to a follow up film.

Final thoughts - does anyone else think that Andrew Garfield would make a good Richard Dean Anderson/Macgyver replacement in any (god forbid) reboot?  I reckon he's got the same kind of charisma/easy charm that Rick Anderson used to such great effect in Macgyver...

+1 for "Her". 8/10
I'm tempted to get it in bluray as I watched it on a tiny 4 inch screen on plane.

Mr Phoenix can certainly act. He is alone in 75% of the scenes
Suttle science fiction themes. Cinematography was very good.

don't trust the mouse !

just watched the buena vista/miramax version of zhang yimou's hero on bd.

while the picture is fine, some american idiot (the bd was mastered for us audiences) decided to have the awful english dub in losseless dts audio and the original chinese soundtrack in lossy dolby digital.

second crime was that another idiot (or the same idiot) re-wrote the english sub-titles !

on the original chinese dvd the key phrase 'all under heaven' has been simplified to 'our land' wtf obama ???

mandarin speakers/listeners will know which is right, hint - it's not the yank version.

how could quentin tarantino (he 'presents' the film for us audiences) sign off on this travesty ?

Just watched it in 2D (can't cope with 3D - I always get a headache).

It was not bad IMV - certainly had it's moments. It was the first Spidey film I have managed to watch to the end, at least!

I grew up reading Spiderman comics as a young boy and he's always been my favourite comic book hero. However I find all the movies very hard going and far more obsessed with the Spiderman/girlfriend dynamic than the comics ever were (unless that happened after I grew up and stopped reading them circa 1983!) and usually not enough about the Spiderman/Bad Guy dynamic.

Ironman movies get the balance about right. Spiderman movies never do. Always too soppy.

I saw The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on Tuesday and while I enjoyed it I didn't enjoy it as much as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 which is saying something because I thought the first Amazing Spider-Man was a lot better than Raimi's first attempt. IMO the chemistry between Garfield/Stone trumps Maguire/Dunst any day of the week but they completely failed with the bad guys. They focused on the wrong guy for a start, I get that Webb probably wanted to steer away from the close friendship/mortal enemies Parker and Osborn have together as it had already been done by Raimi but he decided to add it anyway just with a lot less detail and instead focused on Electro a largely forgettable bad guy who really had almost no impact on the story as a whole. In saying all that I still give it a 7/10 mainly because they did something extremely right but something I can't mention as it would be a major plot spoiler.

I just re-watched Alien and its extras, after the untimely death of HR Giger this week.

He was the Swiss artist who invented the look of the alien and the planet etc that it came from.

Transcendence (2014)  at St Lukes in Auckland.   On 4 of us in the theater  so it hasn't got long to run.  I gave it a 7 out of 10.    The story ending was a bit wanky I thought.
