Not everyone sees movies at the theatre and some of us won't bother watching movies where the ending has been ruined for them.

I've already removed the spoiler from the original post, so we can probably move on now and agree to disagree (I'm in the "no spoilers - ever" camp obviously)

Oblivion - 6.5/10

Tom Cruise as Wall-E? What could possibly be wrong with that?  Height certainly wouldn't be an issue...

Actually, it's not that bad a film.  The story: a pair of humans left behind on Earth following a devastating war with aliens, charged with protecting and maintaining the machines that are turning seawater into fusion for the space station Tet, before they and the rest of humanity escape to one of Saturn's moons. But then, something goes wrong! :)  The basic premise is an interesting one, and the film's "twist" isn't that bad, if a little predictable.  My major complaint is that the film takes too long to get going.  After what seemed like two thirds of the film had gone by I glanced at the player and was disappointed to see that only 40 mins of the 125 minute running time had elapsed.

As seems to be the case with so many films these days, there's nothing much wrong with it, but nothing particularly noteworthy either.  A reasonably entertaining (if overlong) two hours, but little to stick in the mind afterwards...

Silent Running. 7/10

An oldie but goodie.
Slow thoughtful story of Forrest kept on spaceships as earth too polluted and the botanist charged with their care decides to do when told to destroy the forrests and return to earth.

On Netflix. Currently looking for Netflix film clubs to help decide which film to watch. But spoilt for choice.

I agree, not the greatest story wise.
But the picture quality and especially the sound quality make this an awesome film.
Watched it three times and would easily watch again. If you haven't seen it with a good projector and surround sound system, you haven't really seen it yet.

ilovemusic: don't trust the mouse !

just watched the buena vista/miramax version of zhang yimou's hero on bd.

while the picture is fine, some american idiot (the bd was mastered for us audiences) decided to have the awful english dub in losseless dts audio and the original chinese soundtrack in lossy dolby digital.

second crime was that another idiot (or the same idiot) re-wrote the english sub-titles !

on the original chinese dvd the key phrase 'all under heaven' has been simplified to 'our land' wtf obama ???

mandarin speakers/listeners will know which is right, hint - it's not the yank version.

how could quentin tarantino (he 'presents' the film for us audiences) sign off on this travesty ?

Screw ups are very common with BD releases. So much so you should research a title before buying as different companies are responsible for different releases and sometimes the only way to buy the good version of a title may be to order it from overseas. Heavy noise reduction, compressed sound tracks, crops, stretches, PAL speed up from 24fps to 1080i50, and cuts are the typical problems. The most annoying thing is all the old 4:3 content being released to BD cropped to 16:9 because Americans think all 4:3 = SD.

Pan's Labyrinth is on Maori TV tonight if anyone hasn't seen it.

The picture and sound quality (Bluray) was pretty good.  I don't have a projector, but it still looked good on 50" plasma + 5.1 sound.

We've had our sound system for over 3 years, and it still catches us out sometimes when we watch blurays - a doorbell will ring on screen, and my wife and I both swivel to see who's at the door, even though our doorbell sounds nothing like it.  Bullets whizzing past, planes flying overhead - it's a great experience, but one that still takes us by surprise even after all this time.  Especially the blurays - when I'm showing off our setup to people who have never seen bluray, I show them the flight crash scene in Fight Club, with the sound turned right up.  Feels like you're right in the middle of the crash.  Fortunately, our walls are really solid, so our neighbours never even hear a blip.
