Godzilla.

Biggest surprise was that my 6yr old son who I dragged along because I didn't want to sit by myself didn't freak out.

Watched "The Monuments Men" on Amazon Instant Video. Not bad story, but weak in some parts. Giving it a 6.5 for the era reconstruction and some interesting story.

As above watched Monuments Men would rate about the same. Not terrible just not that good either.

I saw X-Men: Days of Future Past last night.

Definitely the best Byran Singer film I've seen, and the best Bryan Singer X-Men.

It's a really tight, enjoyable film and story, highly recommended!

The 3D is pretty weak though...so consider that when you're choosing the session to go to.

^ Thanks for the heads up about the 3D. I'm not rabidly pro- or anti-3D, but it's good to know whether the 3D is done well or not. I've occasionally searched review sites to see whether the 3D is worth it, but few seem to mention it. In fact, it would be good if there was a review site that rated the 3D separate from the movie review, and noted whether (and how many) post credit sequences there were. I haven't found one though...

Godzilla - 7/10

I realise that the following admission may require me to hand in my geek card, but before seeing this movie I had not seen a godzilla film. Come to that, I knew virtually nothing about the godzilla story. I knew there was a large monster, but that was about it. I saw the trailer for this film once, so I went into the film more or less cold on the backstory, plot, and cast details. I was interested to see Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, and Juliette Binoche - a reasonably impressive cast. The story is pretty straightforward (no idea how much of this is consistent with previous versions) - Bryan Cranston is an American working at a Japanese nuclear power station in 1999 when a seismic event causes a catastrophic meltdown. 15 years later, he's still obsessed by the causes of the event. When he's arrested in the quarantine zone his now-grown son (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), who is an explosive ordnance disposal soldier arrives to bail him out of jail. Two large creatures emerge and start to wreak havoc, followed shortly by godzilla. Destruction ensues.

At the risk of "spoiling" this for anyone else who is a Godzilla-noob like me, I was surprised to learn that godzilla was a "good guy", and was something of a "champion" for humanity. It was good to see how the characters avoided an overblown reaction to things - Taylor-Johnson's soldier isn't some gung-ho military hero stereotype, he just does his job, out of concern for his family and for duty, not to be some caricature of a soldier. The other military figures also seem strangely reasonable, rather than the trigger-happy collateral-damage freaks that usually populate this type of film. It showed remarkable restraint to portray things realistically - well, as realistic as you can be in a film featuring a giant monster battling two slightly-smaller monsters.

My wife enjoyed it, and I would have probably enjoyed it more if I hadn't been so dead-tired. It's the first time I can recall ever nodding off in a movie theatre, albeit briefly. Wife assures me I didn't snore, but I think the absence of booming explosions and long periods of no dialogue soothed me into short periods of eyelid inspection time. Nothing to do with the film, I'm sure.

I enjoyed The Monuments Men for a light hearted story. It was a refreshing change from the usual 'heavy' violent war stories. But can see how it would be a let down if expecting the latter.

Caught 'Non Stop' with Liam Neeson recently. I am a bit of a Fanboy from his 'Taken' persona, but this was very much a watered down version in the confines of an aircraft. Not a complete waste of time but a sad rip off. 6/10.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I don't think they have much retrospective stuff, but for new releases it's great.

At some point I was comparing their interrogation menthods with those on Inglorious Basterds... Now that was a movie.

Just re-watched Alien on blu ray. What a great film.

Have you noticed how the technology on display in Alien is the same tech shown in Blade Runner? The computer display when ships take off is the same in both movies (ie same display with the word "purge") - I noticed it for the first time tonight when I watched Alien even though I have previously seen both movies multiple times. Others are way ahead of me:

Also I think Ridley Scott's sound guy has used the same wind sound in both movies. The wind sounds the same when Deckard is in his apartment and when the Alien crew is in their craft on the planet.

Not uncommon for directors to reuse footage or audio across different films. Michael Bay is known for having the same freeway car chase scene from Bad Boys in Transformers, among others.
