The openers that prevent cuts are brilliant and I'd never buy anything else. There are some really good quality ones that work really reliably.

Reminds me of when I bought a can opener from Countdown.

Reminds me of buying cheap jandals at the Warehouse. First pair didn't last a day. Took them back for a replacement. Those lasted a day. Back for another replacement. Those lasted another day... another replacement. Put those on at the counter and didn't get out of the shop before they broke.

It is the principle of the thing. Rugby is given way too much attention here. It has a place, like everything. The place is not everything.

Rugby is not everything, but when we make the final of the penultimate tournament of our national sport, then it's news. News is defined as what people are interested in.

It might suit you better to read a newspaper so you can select exactly what you want to consume.

It's no different from us doing well in any sport, it's interesting to lots of people, therefore it's reasonable it gets reported on.

As someone else mentioned, news outlets exist to sell readership, not to inform you of a particular thing.

@networkn to add to your comment. There are in excess of 160,000 registered rugby players, 1,600 referees and 13,000 coaches. Add to that social players, schools kids and all the families. There are over 5,000 games played around the country each week. There are over 20,000 volunteers and managers and over 500 rugby clubs in NZ. The number of fans would be in the hundreds of thousands. So just a couple of folk wanting to see news of the game.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Could also add it's one of our most recognized brands and is responsible for millions if not significantly more, revenue in tourism.

Not everyone wants to hear bad news all day every day, sport is typically fun if not slightly agonizing at times.

Come to think of it, I am annoyed that 'news' is getting in the way of more sports reporting ;) Deadlock in congress? Yawn, happens every year.

@networkn my wife is watching the final but I won't be, the stress will be enormous and she thinks I would be better off going out so I am going out with my granddaughter. They think my blood pressure will thank me.

Fair enough. The 2011 Final nearly killed me and I was there, right in front of where Woodcock went through the lineout to score. 2015 was one of the greatest moments in NZ sport I can recall.

I've received notification of a referral from one specialist to another. It's in April 2024, over five months away, and this is going private.

I got on to things early. I saw the GP in January, had the first diagnostic scan, then saw the first specialist in February through to September, and now feels like a big wait. I realise this covers Christmas and summer holidays, but still feels like a long wait.

I feel sorry for people who were not able to get treatment early and have to live with debilitating effects while waiting.

I have no objection to Rugby being in the sports news. That is what the sports news is for. My objection is to it being allowed to take over the real news, collecting all the headlines while pushing the real news to one side or completely away. This distorts the impact of both. I am not complaining about rugby being in the news, I am just pointing out that the real news matters more than the thing it is being displaced for.

Some others would consider that All Blacks Rugby, and particularly the RWC are social and cultural phenomena that transcend sport hence its place in the news outside the sports segment.

Annoyance du jour, which I feel I might have posted in the past: when you're expecting a courier delivery and the courier drives right past your place without stopping. The tracking still says it's expected today.

Discovering that a starling has made a nest in one corner of our roof.

Was cleaning the gutters and whilst pulling out sticks of pea straw a starling flies out. Climbed up into the roof space and there’s a couple of bird poo spots on the way there. Looks like it had collected the pea straw from our garden where we’d laid it out as mulch. Heck of a mess to clean out. Pink bats are nasty and it’s right in a corner that I’ll need to use a rake to pull it out with

Is the bird likely to have laid eggs in it yet? I’m in two minds of ripping it out now or waiting

Previous owners had tried to block it off with chicken wire from the outside which clearly hasn’t worked.

The NZ Commerce Commission threatened Sanitarium when they decided to withdraw their products from The Warehouse, saying they needed to redirect their products to overseas markets, They backed down, so well done Commerce Commission.

Fortunately, I don't buy any of their products. I wonder why other churches don't buy/setup their own companies. Thankfully there don't appear to be any others of note

NZ Herald: Lifting the lid on Sanitarium

The breakfast food giant doesn't pay company tax because of its owner's charitable status. Christopher Adams finds there are some questions about why it is investing some of its cash overseas.

Down any New Zealand supermarket's breakfast cereal aisle, there's one company that dominates the shelves.

Sanitarium - the maker of Kiwi staples Weet-Bix and Skippy Cornflakes - has evolved into a giant of the local food manufacturing sector over the last century.

The Royal Oak-based firm says its share of the New Zealand cereal market sits at about 35 per cent, while Kellogg's, its nearest rival, holds roughly 23 per cent.

Sanitarium's ownership structure, however, sets the company apart from its multi-national competitors such as Kellogg's, Kraft and Nestle, which are publicly listed.

Wholly owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Sanitarium's arms on both sides of the Tasman are exempt from paying company tax on their earnings because their profits help fund the church's charitable and religious activities.

But that tax break doesn't mean all of the income generated by the church's local businesses is required to stay in this country.

I think churches should not have tax exemptions. This is evidence number one.

If one can't play nice, then change the way it is. It will affect everyone but it will stop the abuse.

Honestly I don’t care for their business practices in the same way that many people buy from China without care that they’re supporting the CCP.

I enjoy Sanitarium products and will continue to buy it. If Weetbix was the only food available to me after being marooned on an island I’d be happy.
