I think churches should not have tax exemptions. This is evidence number one.

If one can't play nice, then change the way it is. It will affect everyone but it will stop the abuse.

It doesn't matter whether they are a church or not. The key is whether they are a genuine charity. If most of the profit is not allocated to charity and is spent on nice cars and houses for the church's management they they should lose their charitable tax status. If they do distribute their profits to genuine charities then regardless of whether they are Mormons or Satan Worshippers - they deserve their status.

Fortunately, I don't buy any of their products. I wonder why other churches don't buy/setup their own companies. Thankfully there don't appear to be any others of note

I have no objection to Rugby being in the sports news. That is what the sports news is for. My objection is to it being allowed to take over the real news, collecting all the headlines while pushing the real news to one side or completely away. This distorts the impact of both. I am not complaining about rugby being in the news, I am just pointing out that the real news matters more than the thing it is being displaced for.

The issue seems to be your perception of what is 'real' news. Real news is what the majority of people would find interesting, informative etc.

A *significant* number of NZ'rs are interested in Rugby, especially our national team. I'd go so far as to say more Kiwi's would be interested in the news related to the AB's than the news related to what the US Congress deadlock issue is happening today.

I'd have to take your word on the fact Rugby pushed something 'more' important out of the news altogether. Plenty of times I've seen it be the leading (or second) story, but I can't think of any times something important didn't get reported that needed to be, as a result.

As I previously pointed out, this is the thread for Small Things That Annoy You. It is not a forum for defending doctoral dissertations. The disproportionate significance accorded to Rugby on our national news media annoys me. That is all.

The News, and public TV in general annoy me.  Now we have the ability to look up whatever news we are interested in, from whatever source we favour at whatever time we feel like, and watch whatever we feel like on one of the many streaming services without being yelled at every 5 minutes about some product or other that wee have no interest in, why is public TV still a thing?

I get reminded how much it annoys me every time I visit my parents and am subjected to the evening TV.

I invited Mum for dinner the other day. "How does 6:15 sound?" I ask. "Can we make it 6:30 so I can watch the headlines first?" comes the reply. TV1 news is absolutely still a thing in mum's house!

Apparently it is still a thing for old people. I qualify. I am also computer literate and quite capable of finding and streaming other news sources, but I still watch the TV news at six. At least when it is not full of rugby.

I qualify as "older people" too, and I too watch the TVNZ1 News every night but never at 6pm.

I watch it recorded on my Sky box, usually starting 6:15 or later - this means I fast forward through all the advert breaks, and also often skip the worst of the visual death & mayhem. Even starting at 6:15 or 6:20, I end up having to watch the weather forecast in real time

I can buffer the stream in TiviMate and jump around in it but I usually don't bother. I just let it run and hit the mute button during unwanted bits while I check email.

What’s not to love about the six o’clock news?

Where else are you going to find exclusive reports, that are pushed to the lead item because they have scooped the other channel? Where the auto cue reader crosses breathlessly to some cub reporter standing outside a darkened building where something happened earlier in the day (before everyone went home). What can you tell us? is the throw, as if there is more information than what is being reported. To then be given the reporter’s opinion on events. All the time I’m thinking “Why is this leading the news?”

Otherwise they send the same cub reporters out into weather to report weather events. Or they do “man in the street” interviews to gauge public opinion, where they find one “yes”, one “no” and one “I don’t know”. Unless it’s something controversial of course, where no one would dare be recorded having a contrary view.

There was a small amount of fun during the recent election coverage to try and guess when that coverage would finish and then turn the TV on to get the rest of the news. It has meant I now listen to the promo at the start, decide there is nothing worth watching and turn the TV off until the weather is on at 6:55.

Why do you bother watching the weather. Windy.com provides better forecasts, available any time of the day.

For our sins we also watch TVNZ news. On the TVNZ app on appleTV, typically at about 7pm. It used to start with the last 30sec or so of the Chase, which was the best part of watching. However TVNZ tightened up their timing and now it's about the last couple of seconds. As others mentioned, I spend a bit of time fast forwarding over ads and puff-piece pseudo journalism.

The autocue reader crosses to the cub reporter then there's dead air for 5 seconds. You'd think they could do the cross in a way that allowed the reporter to anticipate their cue if there was a fixed delay in transmission.

MetService needs to get a grip.    Showers, some heavy. Showers easing this afternoon  Total rainfall so far today: 0.0 mm. Total rainfall forecast for today: 0.0 mm

Rain forecasting has been awry for a while now. Read just the words not the one line or hourly data, crazy.
