As if discovering a birds nest in a corner of our roof isn’t bad enough, a pair of myna birds are tormenting it, perching on the guttering and making a big song n dance.

Speaking of myna birds, ever noticed how they seem to fly off the road at the very last second when you’re driving towards them in your car? Every other bird flies off well in advanced. Myna birds? Ima sit here and make you think you’re going to hit me resulting with a mess in your grill.

A family friend had two "crossed out" mynas on the back of his car, like they used to have on the fighter planes back in the war. "I got two of 'em!"

I’ve long considered Mynas to be the matadors of the bird community. Waiting til the last second to move out of the road to avoid the bull’s horns (or in this case the front of the car).

Those mynahs really bully our cat in nesting season. Noisy buggers.

PolicyGuy:

Geektastic: Pointless airport procedures.

[snip]
Seven boarding pass checks, 3 of which are airside and after four boarding pass checks.
Then
1) Boarding called
2) Boarding pass checked
3) Walk down air bridge
4) Crew check boarding pass….

I get that these things need checking but can’t help but feel that’s taking the Michael a bit.

Some of it is Security Theatre, but the last two checks are not security related at all:
  2) is to stop the passenger getting on the wrong plane, they're mostly looking at the flight number; and
  4) is to direct the passenger to the right part of the plane - they're really only looking at your seat number.

What got me was things like checking it literally 10 steps before you have to scan it into a machine that checks it!

Also, transit through Sydney. We went through all the previously described steps, then remained in a metal tube at 41,000 feet for 13 hours. First thing they do when we get off? Scan the bags.

I remain unsure where we could have acquired anything dubious between boarding and disembarking.

I know of two work colleagues who both accidentally got onto the wrong plane. How they managed to do it with all of the checks I have no idea. It wasn't until the doors had closed and the captain was sharing what the weather was going to be like at the their destination of Frankfurt did they stand up and tell the stewards they were meant to be going to Munich. Would have been a pretty thorough investigation conducted by Lufthansa and the Dublin airport after that one.

Animals are just thick. I know cars are a new concept to them, but its like, see big red / white / whatever object moving rapidly towards you - run / fly straight towards it or in front of it cause thats the obvious thing to do.

"Hmmm, sir... your explosive device seems to have malfunctioned. Let me fix that for you."

But, I guess from another passenger? Or a crew member? Or airport employee?

Admittedly, the other passengers (and crew members and airport employees?) would also have been scanned.

Whilst your arrival airport might be happy to trust that Sydney airport scanned everything correctly, could they be so sure if you had come via Bangkok or Bogota or Moscow?

And I can imagine a chain where a guy gets on a plane Bangkok to Sydney and gives a crew member an illicit parcel. The crew member, on their next leg to London, gives the parcel to a passenger who embarked in Sydney, and who will take it through Customs at Heathrow.

Our supermarkets annoy me. Not just because they are greedy monopolists. They also make 'exclusive' arrangements with different suppliers so a brand that is available at one, is not carried by the other. This means I have to visit both to get the things I want. Worse, the thing I want is often not available at all. I have lived in many countries and I have never been in one where reliability of stock is such an issue. Maybe it's not their fault but it is still annoying. Worst of all is when both monopolists refuse to stock something. I ran into this with an Australian product I discovered here that subsequently disappeared from shelves. This bothered me so much that I emailed the manufacturer to ask why and they replied that both monopolists had decided not to stock their item any longer. In other words, it is now unavailable in New Zealand. I get very tired of having overcharging supermarkets decide what I am allowed to purchase. A little variety, please!

Our last visit to Intermarché my wife said “How depressing!” And I asked why.

“Next week we go back to shopping in communist Russia circa 1976!” Came her reply.

To be fair I've done it twice this year. I have six flights per month usually. The first time I got to the gate really early, so sat there doing some work with headphones on. They'd changed the gate between me printing my pass and boarding (it's not that I hate the app boarding pass, I hate waiting for those to increase their screen brightness, or wake their phone up so it scan). When it was time to board I joined the end of the line, one of the scanners was down, so I was "checked" manually. Got onto the plane, steward did a double take and said, this isn't going to Auckland. So I was sent back out again and onto the correct plane. What was more amusing as I was getting annoyed at the people in front of me talking about Christchurch weather!! I was in Wellington flying to Auckland thinking, who cares about Christchurch weather!

The second time this year was when an Australian colleague whom I didn't know was in town, said hello and we walked onto the same plane as I assumed we were going to the same town. However that was regional, where they have multiple planes boarding at the same time, so it's quite easy to just turn off with everyone else. The bigger flights it's not usually so easy!

What happens there in Argentina should be interesting in the near future. If it is what I think it is, the world will soon find out.

The Market NZ . They had a monitor that was the cheapest i could find and also a $30 off black Friday voucher , everything was fine until they calculated the shipping from Auckland to Rotorua. $120 to ship it. i am still looking. I hate how online stores market something cheap and then make it up with shipping. Do they think we are that stupid we wont notice.

He's hinting that since the new Argentine president holds certain political views often attributed to a failed Austrian painter, he thinks there could be parallels between Argentina 2023 and Germany 1933.
