Do you think it may be possible that the motivations between these two groups are completely different? That just because they share some similar characteristics of behaviour that they may not share other apects such as their employment status?

I get that we do draw conclusions based on our prior knowledge and exposure, but surely you can read what you’ve written above and see you’ve made some astoundingly wide generalisations to conflate these groups. While I know I won’t change your mind on this issue overall, but feel I still need to make these points…

Nope, talking about "motivations" implies that these people are behaving rationally, which is clearly not the case. We are not going to agree on this one, so let's leave it at that.

The characterisation of all whoever these Restore Passenger Rail people as drunken criminal drug users is kind of scary, not helpful to anyone, and bound to be inaccurate.

NZHerald: Rosemary Penwarden, a 64-year-old retired scientist, appeared in the Wellington District Court today via audio-visual link from Wellington Hospital

Guardian: New Zealand woman creates her own electric car for $24,000. Rosemary Penwarden says the vehicle, powered by home rooftop solar, has been running smoothly for three years

It’s less scary than dumb. It’s quite literally the sort of thing that causes polarisation.

How much does one of those cost? Does it just plug into the 12v outlet? It sounds like a useful thing to invest in.

Several of our vehicles have had them including our current one. They take a long time to inflate a tyre. They are good for topping up a tyre. They can only be used in short bursts as they can overheat and die.

It depends what you buy.

If you buy a tiny compressor designed for bike tyres or passenger cars it takes forever to inflate an SUV.

If you buy something designed for SUVs you can go from 12psi up to 40psi all 4 tyres in 10 minutes. I use mine regularly when we go in the desert. It does draw 70a so you need to be connected directly across the battery.

Similar protestors in London have had one or two altercations with spirited members of the public...

My view is that your right to protest does not trump my right to go about my lawful business unimpeded.

Of course your right to go about your lawful business doesn’t also empower you to behave like a vigilante. That would put you on the same level as the protestors.

In the leadup to the election, it would be good if one of the political parties could quantify what these people are costing the taxpayer, and commit to cracking down on them. There would probably be a lot of votes in it.

Sure, we can just add it to the bill for what climate change is already costing us.

Mine was about $750.  It's permanently connected to the battery by some fairly hefty cables, with an outlet that the inflater hose is plugged into.  That would be excessive for most people.  But bthyea r eveyr popular with the 4x4 crowd

I have it because when I breach launch to boat at a particular location , I deflate the tyres by 50% for grip in the sand.  The compressor allows speedy reinflation.  Four tyres from 15psi to 34psi in about five minutes.

For comparison, the sort of small portable compressor you'd buy at Repco or SCA for ~$100 can take several minutes to reinflate one SUV tyre.

An onboard compressor can also drive a pneumatic impact wrench, air jack or any air tool you're working on the car with. Much easier than running an extension cord or dragging a decent sized compressor out to the car.  Also useful for air cleaning the car and foaming-up cleaning solutions.  Some 4x4 folks have air actuated diff locks, adjustable air suspension and of course .... air horns.  Too much power for an inflatable pool toy though.  RIP the inflatable flamingo.

For those denigrating these folks that are protesting without knowing them, ask yourself would apply this denigration to Dame Whina Cooper, Joe Hawke, Fernando Pereira?

Dame Whina is someone I had a lot of admiration for.  She found a way to protest with impact and dignity and took constructive action at the same time.  She seemed to me a gracious and pragmatic person.  Every time I saw her on TV she made me smile, even though she was often talking about contentious subject matter.

Her views on achieving racial harmony in NZ were pragmatic if a little interesting: "Marry them".
