If this sized EQ happened in the Lower part of the Hutt Valley and some reclaimed parts of Wellington, it would also very likely suffer the same form of liquefaction. It is scary stuff to see in real life.

Can't be that bad - GNS Science is based in the Hutt!

I can remember a few good quakes during the years I lived and worked in Lower Hutt, but nothing like this one!

When one happens on the Wellington Fault, then the effects may be worse as Wellington/Lower Hutt are at Ground Zero - not buffeted by hundreds of meters of gravel and 20/30km away. But then I think Wellington has a lot more modern buildings, so who knows.

Firstly, it wasn't the French :-)

For the original Richter Scale

"Developed in 1935 by Charles Richter in partnership with Beno Gutenberg, both of the California Institute of Technology"

For the general non-linear nature of the scale:

"
The Richter magnitude scale, also known as the local magnitude (ML) scale, assigns a single number to quantify the amount of seismic energy released by an earthquake. It is a base-10 logarithmic scale obtained by calculating the logarithm of the combined horizontal amplitude (shaking amplitude) of the largest displacement from zero on a particular type of seismometer (Wood–Anderson torsion). So, for example, an earthquake that measures 5.0 on the Richter scale has a shaking amplitude 10 times larger than one that measures 4.0. The effective limit of measurement for local magnitude ML is about 6.8.[citation needed]

The Richter scale has been superseded by the moment magnitude scale, which is calibrated to give generally similar values for medium-sized earthquakes (magnitudes between 3 and 7). Unlike the Richter scale, the moment magnitude scale is built on sound seismological principles, and does not saturate in the high-magnitude range. Magnitudes are still widely stated on the Richter scale in the mass media, although usually moment magnitudes—numerically about the same—are actually given."

So anyone who understands logarithmic scales should have no problem.

I am now wondering how this works between e.g 4.0 and 5.0.
Is 4.1 twice as much?
Can't be, because then 4.9 would be 10 times as much not 5.0.
Oh - my head.

Anyway, going up a whole number seems to be 10 times as severe.

The good news is that going down a whole number is 10 times less severe.

Just spent 10 days away and it was great not thinking about (experiencing) the aftershocks!

Get home and there barely 6 hours before we have a sizable aftershock. Sigh.

That's Christchurch for you :)

It seems that that website talking about Luner Activity vs Earthquakes has some truth to it, they predicted a bigish earthquake between the 2nd of this month and the 8th.
