Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit - 6/10

It was interesting to read the views of others on this film.  I watched it last week and didn't think it that bad, though it's a far cry from the earlier films (I saw Clear and Present Danger last year coming back from the US, and thought it was terrific).  It was one of those films where everything was very much "ok" without ever impressing.  Not particularly memorable in any way, though my wife and I did note that it was interesting to focus on "economic" terrorism (though the plot reduces to a much simpler act of physical terrorism at the end - there's only so much tension you can conjure up with a spreadsheet).

About Time - 7.5/10

Saw the trailer for this a while back and figured it might be an ok romcom.  Which it definitely was.  Domnhall Gleeson does a remarkable job of capturing the essence of being Bill Nighy's son Tim.  The plot is that Bill Nighy reveals to his son on his 21st birthday that the men in the family have the ability to travel back within their own past.  This opens the doors to a range of obvious scenes where Tim uses his new-found powers to correct a series of goofs in his effort to find a girlfriend.  Anyone who's ever played a videogame with fingers hovering over the save/load buttons will appreciate what a boon this type of power would be.  It avoids all that "let's kill Hitler" stuff, by focussing on what you would do differently in your own life - a neat concept.  The first part of the film is pretty predictable, but after a while the heart starts to shine through, and makes you wonder whether time spent trying to correct and perfect all the little mistakes robs you of the richer experience of life, warts and all.

Domnhall Gleeson is really good, Bill Nighy is brilliant as ever, and Rachel Macaddams as Tim's girlfriend is surprisingly believable.  The film probably won't rock your world, but it is enjoyable and less "romcom" and more focussed on the different relationships of the central character to his girlfriend, his sister, and his dad, and the impact of his choices on those relationships.

jodorowsky's dune - epic doco on cult film maker alejandro jodorowsky's attempt to bring frank herbert's dune to the big screen. he ultimately failed to get the film made but his work had a lasting influence on future science fiction films.
9/10 !

Yes, one being Dan O'Bannon was involved with that project. If he had not been, he would have never met H.R. Giger whose nightmares gave us the monsters that appeared in Alien.

Cloud Atlas - 6.5/10

Kind of Sci-fi. Starts coming together a bit after 30 minutes or so, lasers begin at approx 45 minutes ; ). Not a great success connecting the separate stories together cinematically or thematically.

I would like to suggest posters add the source of the movie they are talking about.

Some are obviously at the Cinema but could other sources be listed ie DVD, tv, Netflix, iTunes, Amazon etc

Would make it easier for others who want to find the film based on their review.

?Opinions ??

A.

I recently went to see Transformers at the Imax in Bangkok.

Great cinema - we had a small sofa at the back which came with a blanket!! We were going to see it in 4D with the shaking chairs and the spraying water etc but the time just did not work for us.

I'm not a big fan of 3 D movies in general but this one was not bad; maybe Imax is better than normal screen in 3D? The movie was a bit weak - they seem to be running out of ideas a bit, but it had it's moments.

The Thai subtitles were not really at all distracting.

(PS Thanks to Mauricio for fixing it so I can post from Indonesia!)

Skyfall (Bond) 6/10. Gone evil gay spy guy wants to kill Bond's boss. Bond owns up to being bi on occasion. Best Bond film for years. Good mix of suspense, entertainment and the usual bit of sadism. Btw. Title is misleading. Sky, falling, satellites, space battles. Nada.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (at the cinema). I enjoyed it overall. Weta have certainly outdone themselves with the FX this time.

The Lego Movie. 9/10.

My kids are 4.5 and not Lego heads (yet) and they enjoyed it very much. Usually they don't sit through a full length feature without getting crabby, but from a kids perspective, this was foot flat on the action pedal. From dad's perspective there was great character development (no kidding), good in depth story that could easily be interpreted in a variety of ways and a number of wildcard appearances from the 80's, nineties and pop culture.

I loved it and will watch it again this week, when the kids are out.

Skyfall is the name of the Bond family's estate.

Attention fail. I may have been posting to the mh17 thread when they arrived at that point in the movie.
