Is that better than no cowboys? We’ll have a few small jobs coming up.

I've never used No Cowboys but I have used Builders Crack 4/5 times over recent years and always had a good experience with the tradies I've used from there.

We've just had our bathroom done by a number of tradies via Builders Crack - did every bit separately as it was ulitimately the cheapest option.

Builder to do the actual building and installation, Plumber to do the plumbing, Plasterer to do the gib stopping and prep for painting, Painter, Tiler.

All in all, been very pleased with them all.

Have also used Builders Crack for the builing od a retaining wall a couple of years ago - that went well.

Make sure you get three quotes, compare them, read their feedback/reviews etc.

Cool - I discovered (thanks Bitwarden) that I have an account there and used them a couple of years ago!

Have put up a job to get about 150m2 of timber floors sanded and re-sealed, will be interesting to see how it goes. This has got expensive, sounds like $70-$90/m2 - yikes more than carpet!

In the old days I would have rented the sanders and done this myself. Not anymore.

Yeah that's annoying! Everything costs an arm and a leg these days! Our tiny bathroom was a $20k job in the end!

Well, we are planning to do the following:

Convert a weirdly arranged two side-by-side bathrooms into 1 WC and 1 bathroom with a bathtub, shower, vanity and toilet

Convert a small bedroom into an ensuite and walk in wardrobe for the adjacent master bedroom.

I hate to think what this will cost. The re-partitioning will be simple as any moved walls are not structural partitions. There is access in the basement for all the plumbing/drainage which will help.

In the past have done membrane sealed floors with tiled level entry showers. This time will reduce costs by using a shower base.

PB Tech and their do it before everyone else does it sales. At the moment it's an early boxing day sale.

To quote two people on Cheapies:

"I've noticed PB tech seems to have become worse than Briscoes for sales - a lot of these items seem to sit consistently at these prices with massive FOMO aimed sales (the VIP night this week etc)"

"Yeah, hopefully their Waitangi day sales next week will be better"

Ridiculous euphemisms in the press.

The latest being “water related incident” instead, presumably, of ‘drowning’ I suppose. But who knows?

Why not just say drowning? It’s as if they actually believe that if they don’t say the word, it won’t happen.

Not sure it was a drowning per se. I got the impression the guy died while in the water.

Which would suggest it wasn't a "water related incident" so much as an incident whilst in the water. THe water is largely irrelevant if it's not a drowning or a shark attack or similar water-related incident.

That’s my point.

You “get the impression”.

It’s a news report. You’re not supposed to be left guessing.

News reports here are generally pretty dismal, especially when first reported. This is because they just cut and paste whatever the police tell them and it is not the job of the police to provide details. That used to be done by reporters, in the days when there still were reporters.

The journalism path is different now. Newspapers used to hire cub reporters out of school and train them up alongside a grizzled veteran as cub reporters akin to apprentices. Now it is a university degree in journalism plus another (often political science). These wet-behind-the-ears brand new "journalists" start with the typical self-assured hubris and life-experience ignorance typical of today's graduates, and are not backward in coming forward in telling the rest of us how to think. I wish they'd just report the facts instead.

Downloading an episode of something on the Sky Go app so I could watch it offline while on a flight yesterday, then halfway through watching it the app just randomly logged out without me touching anything. Of course without being online (domestic flight so no wifi) there was no way to log the app back in. First time I'd tried using Sky Go on a flight. Never had an issue doing the same with Netflix to watch something downloaded for offline use, but didn't have anything ready on Netflix yesterday as was planning to watch the Sky thing.

It baffles, and actually kinda enrages me, that New World will put something on special (a dollar off! $1.01 cheaper than Countdown!) and claim that they're bringing value to customers. The same product is still $5.50 cheaper at Pak n Save.
